{"id":27219,"date":"2016-09-15T14:57:45","date_gmt":"2016-09-15T14:57:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/?p=25797"},"modified":"2016-11-10T09:49:15","modified_gmt":"2016-11-10T09:49:15","slug":"brexit-could-exacerbate-the-construction-skills-shortage","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/hr-skills-news\/brexit-could-exacerbate-the-construction-skills-shortage\/27219\/","title":{"rendered":"Brexit could exacerbate the construction skills shortage"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>The construction sector has warned big infrastructure projects could be at risk if EU workers are not allowed to remain in the UK post-Brexit<\/h2>\n<p>Groups representing Britain\u2019s surveyors, architects, planners, and builders have written to Brexit Minister <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/people\/david-davis\" target=\"_blank\">David Davis<\/a> outlining concerns relating to skilled workers in the sector.<\/p>\n<p>In the letter, the groups warn the industry would struggle to maintain big infrastructure and housebuilding projects if skilled EU builders are not allowed to remain in the country after the UK leaves the EU.<\/p>\n<p>President of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rics.org\/uk\/\" target=\"_blank\">Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors<\/a> Amanda Clack said: \u201cWe are in the grip of our worst construction skills crisis in almost 20 years.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is a real concern within our industry that if access to a skilled workforce is further restricted, Britain could stop building.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy colleagues and I would urge government to keep this at the forefront of their minds when they come to negotiate our withdrawal from the EU.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Among the signatories is the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.architecture.com\/Explore\/Home.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">Royal Institute of British Architects<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ciob.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Chartered Institute of Building<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rtpi.org.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\">Royal Town Planning Institute<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The skills shortage is not a new concern for the construction sector. The latest RICS survey found 56 per cent of its respondents were stifled by skills shortages. Bricklayers and quantity surveyors are in short supply.<\/p>\n<p>Little insight has been offered by the government as to what controls will be in place in relation to immigration. The uncertainty is concerning for industries like construction, which relies heavily on migrant workers to fill skilled roles. In 2014 the National Institute of Economic and Social Research said more than 100,000 construction workers from the EU were working in the UK. In the capital more than half of all construction workers are from outside the UK.
