{"id":29115,"date":"2016-12-07T14:46:30","date_gmt":"2016-12-07T14:46:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/?p=29115"},"modified":"2016-12-07T14:49:21","modified_gmt":"2016-12-07T14:49:21","slug":"design-success-cambridge-oxford-growth-corridor","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/design-success-cambridge-oxford-growth-corridor\/29115\/","title":{"rendered":"Design will determine success of Cambridge-Oxford growth corridor"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>NIC recommendations will reflect the quality and character of local communities across the Cambridge-Oxford growth corridor, says Phil Graham<\/h2>\n<p>Speaking to the Campaign to Protect Rural England on Tuesday, chief executive of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/news\/good-design-is-essential-for-good-infrastructure-our-recommendations-will-reflect-the-quality-and-character-of-local-communities-across-the-growth-co\">National Infrastructure Commission Phil Graham announced a new partnership with 5th Studio<\/a>, a spatial design agency based in Cambridge.<\/p>\n<p>Graham said that good design is essential to good infrastructure and promised to make this a priority for the NIC, including on the existing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/uploads\/system\/uploads\/attachment_data\/file\/508109\/DOC150316-15032016124609.pdf\">Cambridge-Milton Keynes-Oxford study<\/a> and in the UK\u2019s first National Infrastructure Assessment, which is due for publication very soon.<\/p>\n<p>The NIC\u2019s study into the Cambridge-Oxford growth corridor will work with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.5thstudio.co.uk\/\">5th Studio<\/a> to address the lack of sufficient and suitable housing, and encourage good design in infrastructure and housing in the area, based on international best practice.<\/p>\n<h3>Infrastructure that works for users<\/h3>\n<p>\u201cGood design is about more than aesthetics,\u201d Graham said, announcing the partnership. \u201cIt is about delivering infrastructure which works for its users, and for everyone affected by it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe see this most acutely in the context of our Cambridge-Milton Keynes-Oxford study, a real life example of how design and infrastructure interact.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur preliminary report, published last month, found that, \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/news\/new-east-west-transport-links-could-provide-a-once-in-a-generation-opportunity-for-britains-silicon-valley-armitt\">a lack of sufficient and suitable housing poses a fundamental risk to the success of the area<\/a>\u2019.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The central finding of the Commission\u2019s interim report is that a lack of sufficient and suitable housing presents a fundamental risk to the success of the Cambridge-Oxford growth corridor. Without a joined-up plan for housing, jobs and infrastructure across the corridor, the Oxford-Cambridge arc could be left trailing international competitors.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c\u2018Suitable\u2019 is key,\u201d Graham went on. \u201cIt means new housing and communities whose design recognises that each of these places is successful and attractive as somewhere to work and live in its own right.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>New housing on Cambridge-Oxford growth corridor<\/h3>\n<p>New housing will therefore need to be in the locations where people want to live, and there needs to be a suitable mix of types and tenures to support a range of buyers and residents. Graham also affirmed the position that developments need to suit the areas in which they are located, preserving or even enhancing local character.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat is why we have engaged 5th studio \u2013 a leading spatial design agency with experience working across the fields of architecture, urban design, infrastructure and landscape \u2013 to help us and local stakeholders develop our thinking in this area,\u201d he went on.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe NIC can\u2019t solve these problems ourselves in their entirety. Our role is to work with local partners to set a strategy, not to design every aspect of the infrastructure ourselves.
