The British Institute of Facilities Management (BIFM) has updated its Professional Standards in response to the growing impact of BIM on the sector<\/h2>\n

Building information modelling (BIM) will form part of the Professional Standards for Facilities management, it has emerged.<\/p>\n

The British Institute of Facilities Management<\/a> (BIFM) said it had incorporated BIM into its standards as it has a significant impact on the working practices of FM professionals.<\/p>\n

The FM Professional Standards was created in 2014 to give an overview of what is expected from the industry and those working within it. It can also be used to benchmark the skills of FM professionals.<\/p>\n

The BIFM said the update was in response to the changing requirements and opportunities within the sector.<\/p>\n

Update to the standard crucial<\/h3>\n

BIFM acting chief executive Linda Hausmanis said: \u201cAs an Institute committed to excellence in facilities management, this latest addition to the FM Professional Standards is crucial in acknowledging the ever-evolving FM landscape.<\/p>\n

\u201cBIFM has long recognised the importance of BIM<\/a> to the working practices of our members and we have made great strides in positioning FM as a key player in the progression of BIM and the whole construction project life cycle.<\/p>\n

\u201cOur first FM Leaders\u2019 Forum recognised our role as custodians of future building information and since then we\u2019ve been advocating BIM in FM projects and have published our own BIFM Operational Readiness Guide, with a Good Practice Guide to The FM Role in BIM Projects due to be published later this month.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s therefore fitting we now have BIM within the Property Portfolio Management functional area of the FM Professional Standards, which have been endorsed by leading employers in the sector, to ensure FM maximises and protects the value of property assets and ensure all new building projects and refurbishments are fit for purpose.\u201d<\/p>\n

BIM is undoubtedly an area that is having an impact in all fields. FM, like others, has adapted to fit with the ongoing needs of the sector.<\/p>\n

Survey<\/h3>\n

In a bid to understand what the FM sector understands about BIM a new survey has been launched by BIFM. This has been developed in conjunction with Liverpool John Moore University and Zurich University of Applied Sciences.
