{"id":33206,"date":"2017-05-12T11:09:27","date_gmt":"2017-05-12T10:09:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/?p=33206"},"modified":"2017-05-30T09:32:24","modified_gmt":"2017-05-30T08:32:24","slug":"uk-construction-skills-gap-temporary-visas","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/hr-skills-news\/uk-construction-skills-gap-temporary-visas\/33206\/","title":{"rendered":"UK construction skills gap could be helped with temporary visas post-Brexit"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Temporary visas spanning three years after Brexit could help plug the UK construction skills gap, according to a new report from Migrant Watch UK<\/h2>\n<p>A think tank has suggested temporary \u2018brickie visas\u2019 could help to deal with the UK construction skills gap in the <a style=\"font-family: Verdana, Geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 15px;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/hr-skills-news\/hard-brexit-heighten-skills-crisis\/30796\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">wake of Brexit<\/a><span style=\"font-family: Verdana, Geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 15px; color: #222222;\">. This would grant EU nationals entry into the country after Brexit to fill jobs that would not otherwise qualify for a Tier 2-style work permit. The visa would be issued for a year, but could be extended up to a maximum of three. This would help businesses train local workers for unfilled roles.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Migration Watch UK made the suggestion in a new report <a href=\"https:\/\/www.migrationwatchuk.org\/briefing-paper\/408\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u2018EU Immigration, Post-Brexit \u2013 A Comprehensive Policy\u2019<\/a>. The think tank suggested the Migration Advisory Committee decide the sectors and occupations that would qualify under the scheme, but said evidence of \u201cgenuine attempts\u201d to recruit UK nationals and failing to do so would need to be presented. Furthermore, employers would have to pay an annual levy. This would increase incrementally, making it more financially viable to recruit locally.<\/p>\n<p>The report also recommended this visa should not allow EU workers to claim in-work benefits, tax credits or housing benefits. It would also prevent permanent residence.<\/p>\n<p>Migrant Watch UK\u2019s vice-chair Alp Mehmet said: \u201cTraining outside the workplace has fallen off a cliff since 2000. Employers must now step up to the mark.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>Impact of Brexit<\/h3>\n<p>The construction industry is made up of a significant amount of smaller building firms.
