Salford-based firm MC Construction has seen profits soar this year, with £8m worth of completed projects and an order book of £6m

There is good news for a Manchester firm. Manchester & Cheshire Construction (MC Construction), which is based in the Salford area, reported significant growth after seeing this rise by 20 per cent.

According to the firm its completed projects are worth around £8m. It also has an order book of £6m. MC Construction said it expected to have a record year, hitting £15m.

The news is undoubtedly good for the family-owned business, which is on course to hit its eighth year of consecutive growth. It is particularly good news given how uncertain things are in the construction industry on the whole.

Year-on-year growth

MC Construction saw revenues increase in the 12 months to 30 September by 17 per cent. This was a rise from £10.4m to £12.2m.

Larger projects and strong repeat business were said to be behind the eighth year growth for the firm, which has recently undertaken a number of major projects.

Its largest to date is an £8m project for the University of Manchester. This contract involves the refurbishment of the Samuel Alexander Building, as well as the £2.3m revamp of the Houldsworth student accommodation block in Rusholme.

MC Construction was also the main contractor on the Chancellors Hotel refurbishment at the university. This was a £4m scheme.

Furthermore, it was appointed to double the size of a doctors’ surgery in Blackley, north Manchester in a £1.3m project and was reappointed to Cheshire East Council’s construction services framework.

Due to all these factors the firm’s objective of achieving a £20m turnover by 2018 seems likely, said Managing Director David Lowe.

He added: “After a strong performance in 2015/16 we have further accelerated our growth during this financial year by competing successfully for larger projects.

“We have strengthened our company structure with the appointment of Michelle Richardson to the new role of operations director, and we’ve invested a significant sum to improve efficiency by migrating our IT systems to the cloud.

“With a healthy order book, we are well-placed to achieve our target for this financial year and look forward to the future with confidence.”
