The firm is the first in the world to do so.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iso.org\/standard\/63026.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">ISO20400 standard<\/a> was drawn up by a committee of representatives from more than 40 nations. It has been in development since 2013 and proves a firm has considered environmental as well as personal sustainability when creating procurement policy.<\/p>\n<p>The standard is based on UN principles for human rights, business, and environmental sustainability.<\/p>\n<h3>Achieving the standard<\/h3>\n<p>In order to gain the standard Balfour Beatty was assessed over a period of several days in a series of interviews. The firm used a number of projects to showcase its efforts in sustainability, including the \u00a387m Haymarket Building, which was constructed as part of the St James\u2019 Market development\u2014a \u00a3320m project for the Crown Estates.<\/p>\n<p>Balfour Beatty\u2019s head of sustainable procurement Aaron Reid said: \u201cThe standard gives us a clear framework to determine \u2018what good looks like\u2019 in terms of sustainable procurement and how we compare against it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe assessment itself was robust, practical and coherent.
