A\u00a0panel\u00a0of renowned architects\u00a0have\u00a0highlighted the need for\u00a0more \u2018home-grown\u2019 expertise and\u00a0a\u00a0greater understanding of timber\u00a0in the construction industry<\/h2>\n

Speaking at the Timber Expo 2017<\/a>\u00a0at the NEC Birmingham,\u00a0the architects\u00a0suggested\u00a0that\u00a0the UK could miss out on a\u00a0world-wide renaissance in timber construction due to a lack of investment in building methods and skilled workers.<\/p>\n

According to research, 70% of all new houses built around the world are now made from timber. However, in the UK, this figure stood at just 25%.<\/p>\n

A range of sophisticated engineered wood products that have been used for decades in Germany, Austria and Switzerland are now making their way around Europe and beginning to take hold in the UK.<\/p>\n

Steven Wallis of\u202f dRMM\u00a0<\/a>talked about the role timber\u202fplayed in restoring Hastings Pier to its former glory. He\u00a0said:\u00a0\u201cClients are\u00a0coming to us\u00a0with the specific wish to build in timber, which is quite different from\u00a0a few\u00a0years ago when there was more of a journey to take.\u00a0There is\u00a0a\u00a0need for greater\u00a0timber\u00a0knowledge\u00a0in\u00a0construction and\u00a0with more training and vocational-type learning we can encourage more people into the industry.\u201d<\/p>\n

Darron Haylock of Foster & Partners<\/a> provided\u00a0an insight into\u00a0how\u00a0timber construction\u00a0was used to bring comfort and hope to cancer sufferers\u00a0at Maggie\u2019s at The Robert\u00a0Parfett\u00a0Building\u00a0in Manchester. He said: \u201cWe are struggling in the UK to find specialist contractors who can deal with the\u00a0timber\u00a0creativity\u00a0required to push\u00a0boundaries. The two leading contractors\u00a0we used for\u00a0Maggie\u2019s\u00a0were overseas contractors.\u00a0We need to develop that knowledge and experience\u00a0in the UK\u00a0and promote the\u00a0use of timber in our buildings.\u201d<\/p>\n

Rick Sharp of\u00a0Fairhursts\u00a0Design Group<\/a> discussed building the UK\u2019s first timber chemistry laboratory. He said: \u201cIn the past there was a reluctance to build in timber but that\u2019s changing. Our client wanted to create a very beautiful building that they could use as a sales tool to attract the top professors and undergraduates. There are economic benefits to building in timber because they take your business to the next level.\u201d<\/p>\n

TRADA\u2019s <\/a>Rupert Scott called for more investment in timber engineers, contractors, project managers and factories. He said: \u201cTimber expertise\u00a0still\u00a0has a long way to go in the UK so we need to find ways to attract and train the brightest and the best. We need to look at the skills shortage that exists and as an industry\u00a0work together\u00a0to develop that.<\/p>\n

\u201cTRADA is\u00a0working closely\u00a0with many universities in\u00a0its\u00a0Urban Buzz\u00a02018\u00a0competition<\/a> to generate interest in timber engineering but it really requires a drive on a more macro level.<\/p>\n

\u201cYoung talent needs to see that there is a future in building in timber, and we need to create even more impressive structures to gain their interest. Some government intervention into research\u00a0and\u00a0training would lead the way to more sustainable timber construction taking place in the UK.\u201d<\/p>\n
