{"id":36081,"date":"2017-11-01T11:58:04","date_gmt":"2017-11-01T11:58:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/?p=36081"},"modified":"2017-11-01T11:58:04","modified_gmt":"2017-11-01T11:58:04","slug":"report-claims-new-technology-will-transform-uk-construction-sector","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/digital-construction-news\/bim-news\/report-claims-new-technology-will-transform-uk-construction-sector\/36081\/","title":{"rendered":"Report claims new technology will transform UK construction sector"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>A new report by consultancy and construction firm Mace has claimed that up to 600,000 jobs in the construction sector could be replaced by new technology in the next two decades<\/h2>\n<p>The report,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.macegroup.com\/perspectives\/171027-moving-to-industry-40\">Moving to Industry 4.0: A skills revolution<\/a>,\u00a0states that the next industrial revolution will transform the construction sector, but that thousands of workers will need to be retrained to keep up with the pace of technological change.<\/p>\n<p>It also suggests that UK construction could provide an extra \u00a325bn annually to the UK economy by 2040, but only if its productivity \u201cgap\u201d is closed.<\/p>\n<p>The report claims that the figures \u2013 although only projections \u2013 give a sense of the scale of the talent pool that will need to be reskilled to allow the construction sector to move to Industry 4.0 and embrace productivity-improving technologies.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.macegroup.com\/\">Mace <\/a>warned that without a major effort to reskill the current workforce and attract a new generation of more tech savvy workers, the construction industry and the UK could lose out on the potential productivity benefits of the next industrial revolution.<\/p>\n<p>The construction sector has long suffered from a productivity gap, where it has failed to meet the productivity gains seen in other UK industries.<\/p>\n<p>Improving productivity in the sector would also have a knock-on effect on UK housebuilding and infrastructure delivery, helping to alleviate the housing shortage and ensuring that large-scale infrastructure projects are more likely to be delivered on-time and within budget.<\/p>\n<p>Mace\u2019s report proposes three key recommendations that will help to ensure that the necessary number of workers can be retrained:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Accelerate the use of new technology in training<\/strong> &#8211; By mandating that the latest 3D printing technologies and augmented and virtual reality tools are introduced into industry training programmes and into \u201cconstruction clubs\u201d in schools, the sector can better meet its future skills challenges while also ensuring that courses are attractive to potential students and recruit<\/li>\n<li><strong>Inform lifelong learning decisions &#8211;<\/strong>\u00a0At the moment data is sparse on what skills we will need in the future. By commissioning large-scale sector-wide research and working with government bodies such as the ONS and CITB, the construction industry will be able to ensure that its skills profile is changing to meet actual need<\/li>\n<li><strong>Revolutionise our traditional education programmes<\/strong>\u00a0&#8211; Current apprenticeship and training reforms will not go far enough to prepare the workforce for Industry 4.0. We need to upend the curriculum on offer now to reflect the modern methods of construction and offsite assembly that will be needed in the future.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Mace has placed innovation, research and investment in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/hr-skills-news\/construction-skills-shortage-post-brexit\/33410\">skills <\/a>development at the centre of its business strategy. In 2016, the company invested \u00a342m in research and development alone. This has included the development of industry-leading construction techniques, such as the \u2018jump factories\u2019 being used by Mace on the construction of its East Village project in Stratford, London.<\/p>\n<p>Mark Reynolds, chief executive at Mace, and skills lead on the Construction Leadership Council, said: \u201cEveryone now acknowledges the current <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/hr-skills-news\/construction-skills-shortage-holds-back-development\/32937\">skills shortages <\/a>need to be addressed. Our latest report highlights the opportunities the digital revolution can offer, how we can dramatically close the future skills gap and how we can meet the \u00a325bn \u2018productivity challenge\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe recommendations we have laid out will go some way towards addressing these issues.
