A \u00a327m scheme to reduce flood risk to 4,800 properties in Blackpool has been officially opened by Councillor Fred Jackson and the chair of the Environment Agency Emma Howard Boyd<\/h2>\n

The new flood defence<\/a> at Anchorsholme aims to safeguard the iconic\u00a0Blackpool\u00a0seafront tramway and also protect vital infrastructure and a key pumping station.<\/p>\n

As part of the scheme, a kilometre of concrete sea wall has been replaced \u2013 maintaining access to the beach \u2013 and a new promenade has been installed to attract residents and visitors with views over the Irish Sea.<\/p>\n

The promenade also connects the seafront to Anchorsholme Park, which is also being redeveloped.<\/p>\n

The new defences will help to protect Blackpool\u2019s tourism and recreational income for the next 100 years.<\/p>\n

Howard Boyd said: \u201cBlackpool\u2019s iconic beachfront is visited by thousands of families each year.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis new coastal defence \u2013 delivered in partnership with local councils \u2013 will better protect the town\u2019s popular tourist attractions, as well as nearly 5,000 homes and businesses.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s great news and demonstrates how our work benefits people and the environment.\u201d<\/p>\n

Jackson, the Blackpool Council <\/a>cabinet member for environmental services, added: \u201cI am delighted that this vital sea defence scheme has been officially opened.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe now have a sea wall that will provide much stronger flood protection for years to come.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe also have a wonderful new promenade for all to enjoy, which makes access from the seafront to the park and town so much easier.\u201d<\/p>\n
