{"id":36152,"date":"2017-11-06T09:43:01","date_gmt":"2017-11-06T09:43:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/?p=36152"},"modified":"2017-11-06T09:43:01","modified_gmt":"2017-11-06T09:43:01","slug":"cowboy-clients-threaten-sme-builders","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/cowboy-clients-threaten-sme-builders\/36152\/","title":{"rendered":"\u2018Cowboy clients\u2019 threaten SME builders"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>According to research by the Federation of Master Builders (FMB), three quarters of SME builders say \u2018cowboy clients\u2019 are hindering their business<\/h2>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/hr-skills-news\/fmb-says-citb-must-reform\/35261\">FMB <\/a>research into the impact of \u2018cowboy cvlients\u2019\u00a0reveals serious concerns from SME builders.<\/p>\n<p>The term \u2018cowboy clients\u2019 refers to those who delay or withhold payment without good reason or make completely unreasonable demands.<\/p>\n<p>The research findings identified:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Nearly three quarters think cowboy clients\u00a0are a serious problem for their businesses;<\/li>\n<li>Nearly a quarter have had to wait for more than four months for payment from a client or large contractor;<\/li>\n<li>Less than one-third are always paid within the standard 30 days.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The negative effects that late payment is having on SME builders include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>30% have had to delay payment to suppliers;<\/li>\n<li>20% say late payment stopped them from having the confidence to grow their business;<\/li>\n<li>16% had to borrow additional funds from a bank or other lender;<\/li>\n<li>8% almost went out of business;<\/li>\n<li>5% had to withhold wages and salaries from staff;<\/li>\n<li>4% had to let staff go.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Sarah McMonagle, Director of External Affairs at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fmb.org.uk\/\">FMB<\/a>, said: \u201cThere are so many horror stories of people being duped by cowboy builders.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHowever, our research shows that there\u2019s a flip side to this story with three quarters of small construction firms being hampered by cowboy clients.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTypical cowboy client behaviour can include a demand for the builder to complete tasks not included in the original brief or quote and for no extra payment.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe worst type of cowboy client seeks to delay or withhold payment on spurious grounds, for instance by discovering make-believe faults. Nearly a quarter of construction SMEs have had to wait for more than four months for payment from a client or large contractor.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFewer than one-third of builders are always paid within the standard period of 30 days and this is completely unacceptable.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLate payment is having a direct impact on the ability of construction SMEs to grow and prosper. One in five builders say delayed payments from clients have stopped them from having the confidence to grow their business.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWorse still, nearly 10% say that they nearly went out of business because of this.
