{"id":38744,"date":"2018-02-19T12:51:56","date_gmt":"2018-02-19T12:51:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/?p=38744"},"modified":"2018-02-19T12:51:56","modified_gmt":"2018-02-19T12:51:56","slug":"government-to-improve-housing-complaints-system","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/government-to-improve-housing-complaints-system\/38744\/","title":{"rendered":"Government to improve housing complaints system"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Dissatisfied tenants and homeowners across the country may be offered support as the government considers options to ensure that no-one is left battling with their landlord or builder to resolve housing complaints, Housing Secretary Sajid Javid has announced<\/h2>\n<p>From broken boilers to cracks in walls, the current choice of schemes risks leaving thousands without answers, with others having to manoeuvre between at least 4 different services just to work out where to register housing complaints.<\/p>\n<p>An 8-week\u00a0consultation\u00a0beginning 18 February will use people\u2019s experiences to shape a simpler and better complaints system, so future disputes can be resolved faster and consumers can access compensation where it is owed.<\/p>\n<p>Options considered in the consultation include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Introducing a single <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/hr-skills-news\/bsria-provides-expert-evidence-about-a-new-homes-ombudsman\/38715\/\">housing ombudsman<\/a> to cover the whole of the housing market<\/li>\n<li>If homes builders should be required to join an ombudsman scheme, following on our commitment to expand redress to tenants of private landlord<\/li>\n<li>Naming and shaming poor practice to help tackle the worst abuses.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/javid-launches-social-housing-green-paper\/35106\/\">Sajid Javid<\/a> said: \u201cFor too long, tenants and homeowners have navigated multiple complaints procedures to resolve disputes about everyday household repairs and maintenance.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFixing this <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/tackling-housing-crisis-must-remain-government-priority\/34239\/\">housing crisis<\/a> is about more than just building homes, it\u2019s ensuring people have the answers available when something goes wrong.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cToday\u2019s top-to-bottom review shows Government is working hard to deliver a better and simpler system.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Unlike other areas, such as financial services that have a single and accountable ombudsman, housing has over 4 different complaints bodies.<\/p>\n<p>In the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/rental-sector-in-the-dark-over-rights\/36362\/\">private rented sector<\/a>, there is currently no obligation for landlords to register with a complaints system and this can often leave thousands who do not use a property agent without any option for redress.<\/p>\n<p>House builders are responsible for fixing incomplete work in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/new-build-homes-faults\/31379\/\">new build homes<\/a> but when this does not happen many consumers with issues can find that they have nowhere left to turn.<\/p>\n<p>This is just one of the steps the government is taking to solve the country\u2019s housing crisis and improve the rental sector which 8.6 million households are part of.<\/p>\n<p>From April the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/organisations\/ministry-of-housing-communities-and-local-government\">Ministry of Housing, Communities &amp;
