{"id":38767,"date":"2018-02-20T10:21:01","date_gmt":"2018-02-20T10:21:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/?p=38767"},"modified":"2018-02-20T10:21:01","modified_gmt":"2018-02-20T10:21:01","slug":"barking-riverside-regeneration-receives-500m-boost","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/barking-riverside-regeneration-receives-500m-boost\/38767\/","title":{"rendered":"Barking Riverside regeneration receives \u00a3500m boost"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>London\u2019s Barking Riverside, one of the UK\u2019s largest regeneration projects, receives \u00a3500m for transport links, parkland and other community facilities \u2013 alongside almost 11,000 homes<\/h2>\n<p>The landmark investment has been agreed by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/sadiq-khan-approves-offsite-building-croydon\/38627\/\">Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lqgroup.org.uk\/\">L&amp;Q<\/a>, who formed a partnership \u2013 Barking Riverside Limited \u2013 to deliver the blueprint for the scheme.<\/p>\n<p>The Section 106 agreement, reached with Barking and Dagenham Council and Transport for London, means the Barking Riverside project has secured funding for:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A new TfL Overground station connecting to central London in 22 minutes<\/li>\n<li>Land for seven schools including five primaries, one secondary, and one for special educational needs<\/li>\n<li>A new centre with 65,000 square metres of commercial, retail and leisure space, including a 2km riverside walkway, an ecology centre and new country park space<\/li>\n<li>A combined health care and leisure facility<\/li>\n<li>A cycling hub<\/li>\n<li>Two local retail and dining hubs<\/li>\n<li>Employment, skills and training that will ensure locals benefit from the opportunities created by the scheme.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Barking Riverside will also be London\u2019s first and only NHS Healthy New Town, which will embed health into design and living. Half of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/community-land-trusts-provide-affordable-housing-london\/38690\/\">new homes will be affordable<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Khan said: \u201cThis is an incredibly exciting project for Barking &amp; Dagenham, but also for the whole of London. As we tackle the biggest <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/tackling-housing-crisis-must-remain-government-priority\/34239\/\">housing crisis<\/a> of a generation, major developments like Barking Riverside will deliver thousands of the genuinely affordable new homes Londoners desperately need.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs well as housing, our investment will create the new transport, education and health services needed to turn this into a thriving new community.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLondon will be home to 10 million people in the next decade \u2014 I\u2019m working to plan for that growth and to provide genuinely affordable homes for Londoners.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat will mean increasing density, building on small sites, and using my powers to deliver more affordable homes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Andy Rowland, managing director \u2013 east region, at L&amp;Q commented: \u201cThis agreement marks a vital step for Barking Riverside, ensuring we are able to deliver the necessary infrastructure to build a well-connected and thriving community which will benefit existing and future residents for years to come.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Matthew Carpen, project director for Barking Riverside Limited, said: \u201cThis is another significant landmark for Barking Riverside, and signals \u2018lift-off\u2019 for all future activity on site.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt commits us to over \u00a30.5bn of infrastructure investment over a 15-year build programme.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis agreement demonstrates the dedication to our partnership with the local authority and TFL, to deliver the goals of the project \u2013 a new piece of City with improved connectivity and a multitude of opportunity for both existing and future residents.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lucinda Turner, director of spatial planning at <a href=\"https:\/\/tfl.gov.uk\/\">Transport for London<\/a>, said: \u201cBarking Riverside will be a vibrant new area of east London and our improved transport connections will be vital for those who live, work and visit there.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s important that we promote good growth \u2013 and this funding will help support more sustainable travel with the delivery of our planned London Overground connection, and improved bus, walking and cycling routes for people of all ages through the area.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jasmine Whitbread, chief executive of London First, said: \u201cIt\u2019s hugely encouraging to see new homes, better transport links and more schools, skills and public spaces being built in London.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTackling the housing crisis is a massive task but ambitious projects like Barking Riverside show what can be done.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe challenge for Sadiq, boroughs and developers is to build that ambition across our capital.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The entire <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/estate-residents-in-london-will-be-balloted-on-regeneration-projects\/38307\/\">regeneration<\/a> scheme is scheduled for completion by 2034.<\/p>\n<div class=\"mk-custom-module-container\">\n<\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>London\u2019s Barking Riverside, one of the UK\u2019s largest regeneration projects, receives \u00a3500m for transport links, parkland and other community facilities \u2013 alongside almost 11,000 homes<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":16,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"_monsterinsights_skip_tracking":false,"_monsterinsights_sitenote_active":false,"_monsterinsights_sitenote_note":"","_monsterinsights_sitenote_category":0,"footnotes":""},"categories":[304],"tags":[666,656,669],"stakeholder_rel_tag":[],"contributor_rel_tag":[],"class_list":{"0":"post-38767","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","6":"category-planning-construction-news","7":"tag-affordable-housing","8":"tag-housing","9":"tag-regeneration"},"acf":[],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO Premium plugin v26.9 (Yoast SEO v26.9) - https:\/\/yoast.com\/product\/yoast-seo-premium-wordpress\/ -->\n<title>Barking Riverside regeneration receives \u00a3500m boost | Planning, Building &amp;
