{"id":39735,"date":"2018-03-23T10:15:34","date_gmt":"2018-03-23T10:15:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/?p=39735"},"modified":"2018-03-23T10:15:34","modified_gmt":"2018-03-23T10:15:34","slug":"councils-to-receive-share-of-215m-to-combat-homelessness","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/councils-to-receive-share-of-215m-to-combat-homelessness\/39735\/","title":{"rendered":"Councils to receive share of \u00a3215m to combat homelessness"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Councils across the country are set to receive a share of over \u00a3215m from 2019 to prevent homelessness, Homelessness Minister Heather Wheeler confirmed yesterday (22 March 2018)<\/h2>\n<p>This includes a \u00a315m fund for London councils to support their work together to prevent and reduce homelessness.<\/p>\n<p>This latest funding \u2013 the\u00a0third round from the government\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/publications\/flexible-homelessness-support-grant-2017-18-to-2018-19\">Flexible Homelessness Support Grant<\/a> programme\u00a0\u2013 brings the total government investment to<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/homelessness-minister-doesnt-know-why-rough-sleeper-numbers-are-increasing\/39533\/\"> tackle homelessness and rough sleeping<\/a> to over \u00a31.2bn through to 2020.<\/p>\n<p>Homelessness Minister Heather Wheeler said:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis government is determined to help the most vulnerable in our society and to break the homelessness cycle once and for all. That why we\u2019re investing over \u00a31.2 billion in tackling the issue and bringing in the most ambitious legislation in decades that will mean people get the support they need earlier.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis latest funding gives councils the freedom to invest in homelessness services that work in their area, including support to prevent someone becoming homeless in the first place.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The announcement comes ahead of the Homelessness Reduction Act which comes into action next month to significantly reform England\u2019s legislation and ensure that more people get the help they need when they\u2019re faced with homelessness.<\/p>\n<p>It forms part of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/ambitious-homelessness-reduction-act-to-reform-homeless-risk\/38861\/\">government\u2019s comprehensive approach to reducing homelessness<\/a>, giving early support to those at risk of losing their homes.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to total of \u00a3617m in Flexible Homelessness Support Grant funding and implementing the Homelessness Reduction Act, the government is taking substantial action to tackle homelessness and rough sleeping through:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A new cross-government Homelessness Reduction Taskforce supported by a panel of experts that will drive forward a new strategy to reduce homelessness with an initial focus on rough sleeping<\/li>\n<li>\u00a328mn funding for 3 \u2018Housing First\u2019 pilots in Manchester, Liverpool and the West Midlands to support long-term rough sleepers off the streets. Individuals will be provided with stable, affordable accommodation and intensive wrap-around support. This will to help them recover from complex health issues, for example substance abuse and mental health difficulties and sustain their tenancies<\/li>\n<li>Investing \u00a39bn to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/social-housing-required-to-help-people-trapped-in-homelessness\/38654\/\">build more affordable housing<\/a>, including council homes<\/li>\n<li>Supporting Housing Benefit and Universal Credit claimants living in areas where private rents have been rising fastest, the government will increase some Local Housing Allowance rates by increasing Targeted Affordability Funding by \u00a340m in 2018 to 2019 and \u00a385m in 2019 to 2020.
