Commercial construction also fell sharply. Housebuilding, however, fared better in the month.<\/p>\n<p>Tim Moore of <a href=\"https:\/\/ihsmarkit.com\/index.html\">IHS Markit<\/a>, which compiles the survey, said: \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/health-safety-news\/beast-from-the-east-causing-hazardous-conditions-for-construction-workers\/38993\/\">Snow-related disruption was a key factor behind the marked decline<\/a> in activity on site reported by survey respondents.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In the immediate wake of the June 2016 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/brexit-uncertainty-leads-construction-slowdown\/25142\/\">Brexit vote, the construction PMI\u00a0decreased<\/a> from 51.2 to 46 as builders and investors put projects on immediate hold.<\/p>\n<p>However, by September, the index had bounced back sharply as general confidence recovered.<\/p>\n<p>A wave of cold weather from Russia, bringing heavy snowfall, hit the UK on 24 February 2018. Another freezing wave, dubbed the \u2018Mini Beast from the East\u2019 hit the UK on 17 March.<\/p>\n<p>The latest PMI survey also indicated new orders contracting for a third successive month.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThough March\u2019s figures could be viewed as a temporary blip, without a strong pipeline of work, and strong risk strategies in place, the sector\u2019s health remains in question as we\u2019re still a long way off seeing it operate the way it has over the last year,\u201d said Duncan Brock of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cips.org\/en-ME\/\">Chartered Institute of Procurement &amp;
