The Construction Industry Council (CIC)<\/a> has published the highly anticipated Second Edition of the BIM Protocol, to reflect the current practices and standards regarding the use of BIM<\/h2>\n

The original BIM Protocol was first commissioned by CIC in 2013 as a response to the UK Government BIM Strategy<\/a>.\u00a0 Now that the UK Government\u2019s BIM mandate is in force and BIM is widely used, the Second Edition of the BIM Protocol has been produced.<\/p>\n

The Protocol, drafted by international construction law specialists Beale & Company<\/a>, remains the only standard contractual BIM protocol published in the UK.\u00a0 The second edition has been updated to reflect significant progress with standards and practices in relation to BIM, since 2013, and is being published following significant consultation with the construction industry, legal practitioners and standard contract publishing bodies.<\/p>\n

The Second Edition of the BIM Protocol is closely aligned with PAS 1192-2 and therefore applies to information, not just models.\u00a0 It is also a more flexible document, which can be used alongside a range of different contractual arrangements.\u00a0 The Protocol now includes additional provisions in relation to security, an increasingly important issue, which reflects PAS 1192-5.<\/p>\n

Andrew Croft, Associate at Beale & Company\u00a0lead consultant responsible for drafting the second edition of the BIM Protocol said: \u201cWe are very pleased to have been involved in what has been an extremely interesting project and\u00a0hope that the second edition of the Protocol will help provide additional clarity as to how contractual obligations in relation to BIM are addressed.\u201d<\/p>\n

Graham Watts OBE, Chief Executive of CIC, commented: \u201cCIC has had a seven-year involvement with being at the leading edge of promoting best practice in BIM, which continues with the work of our BIM Forum.\u00a0 The Second Edition of the BIM Protocol demonstrated our ongoing commitment to the multi-professional, collaboration potential of BIM.\u201d<\/p>\n

Dale Sinclair, Director of Technical Practice, AECOM<\/a> and Chair of the CIC BIM Forum, said:\u00a0\u201cThe CIC BIM Protocol is a crucial component of the UK\u2019s BIM level 2 suite of documents. We are delighted that this latest version updates the protocol in line with comments made since its inception. This is an important step forward as we move towards a collaborative digital future.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cProfessor David Mosey of King\u2019s College London<\/a>, added: \u201cWe are very glad to see the important changes made in the second edition of the CIC BIM Protocol. These include clarification as to the duty of care and timing of Project Team Member contributions, reflecting findings from our research report\u00a0\u2018Enabling BIM through Procurement and Contracts\u2019.\u201d<\/p>\n
