{"id":41662,"date":"2018-05-23T11:35:02","date_gmt":"2018-05-23T10:35:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/?p=41662"},"modified":"2018-05-23T11:35:02","modified_gmt":"2018-05-23T10:35:02","slug":"laing-orourke-completes-first-phase-of-graphene-engineering-innovation-centre","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/laing-orourke-completes-first-phase-of-graphene-engineering-innovation-centre\/41662\/","title":{"rendered":"Laing O\u2019Rourke completes first phase of Graphene Engineering Innovation Centre"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Construction firm Laing O\u2019Rourke has successfully handed over the first phase of the new \u00a360m Graphene Engineering Innovation Centre (GEIC) at The University of Manchester<\/h2>\n<p>The GEIC will focus on industry-led application development in partnership with world-leading academics, accelerating the commercial pace of graphene and 2D materials in Manchester and globally.<\/p>\n<p>This is the first project <a href=\"http:\/\/www.laingorourke.com\/\">Laing O\u2019Rourke<\/a> has completed as part of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.estates.manchester.ac.uk\/services\/capitalprojectsunit\/futureprojects\/cpf\/\">The University of Manchester Construction Partnering Framework<\/a>, with the next project, the \u00a3105m building in Manchester for the Henry Royce Institute due to complete in 2019.<\/p>\n<p>Liam Cummins, head of UK building for Laing O\u2019Rourke, said: &#8220;We\u2019re delighted to hand over this fantastic facility on time and on budget for <a href=\"http:\/\/www.manchester.ac.uk\/\">The University of Manchester<\/a> and its funding partners.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;As an engineering enterprise committed to innovation and excellence in our own delivery, it is exciting to think about the potential developments that will come to fruition here at the GEIC and I know our team are rightfully proud of our achievements.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It\u2019s also exciting to have completed our first project as part of The University of Manchester Construction Partnering Framework and we\u2019re keen to take the momentum into our next project on the framework; The Sir Henry Royce Institute.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The new GEIC flagship facility has been funded by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.masdar.ae\/\">Masdar<\/a>-an Abu Dhabi based renewable energy and clean technology company, <a href=\"https:\/\/re.ukri.org\/\">Research England<\/a>, the <a href=\"http:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/regional_policy\/en\/funding\/erdf\/\">European Regional Development Fund<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greatermanchester-ca.gov.uk\/\">Greater Manchester Combined Authority<\/a> and<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/organisations\/innovate-uk\"> Innovate UK<\/a>. It has been designed by world-renowned architect <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rvapc.com\/\">Rafael Vinoly<\/a> and is 8,400 square metres in size.<\/p>\n<p>The GEIC complements the existing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.graphene.manchester.ac.uk\/about\/ngi\/\">National Graphene Institute (NGI)<\/a> creating a critical mass of graphene expertise made up of scientists, engineers, innovators and industrialists.<\/p>\n<p>The GEIC is also encouraging the commercial development of the University&#8217;s North Campus, creating a cornerstone for Graphene City.<\/p>\n<p>James Baker, CEO of Graphene@Manchester said: &#8220;The GEIC is a key component of the University\u2019s strategy for Graphene@Manchester.
