{"id":41800,"date":"2018-05-29T15:26:53","date_gmt":"2018-05-29T14:26:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/?p=41800"},"modified":"2018-05-29T15:32:03","modified_gmt":"2018-05-29T14:32:03","slug":"planners-research-international-workshop","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/planners-research-international-workshop\/41800\/","title":{"rendered":"Young planners chosen to present Airport City research at international workshop"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif;\">Planners from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bartonwillmore.co.uk\/\">Barton Willmore<\/a>, Jen Samuelson and Alice Drew, were selected to take part in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ectp-ceu.eu\/index.php\/en\/youngplanners\">European Council of Spatial Planners Young Planners Workshop<\/a>, for their research into\u00a0<\/span>Southampton&#8217;s viability as an &#8216;Airport City&#8217;<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif;\">The event, held at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.charlesdegaulleairport.co.uk\/\">Charles de Gaulle Airport<\/a>, brought together planners from across Europe to discuss the opportunities and challenges faced in integrating airports more closely with the cities around them.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif;\">The pair were selected to take part in the event after submitting a research proposal, &#8216;<em>Southampton: An Airport City of the Future?&#8217;<\/em>, which was chosen by the Council to be developed further into a 13-page paper.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif;\">Senior planner, Jen Samuelson said: \u201cIt was a very interesting day and an exciting opportunity to share knowledge with peers from across Europe about how cities and airports can mutually benefit each other and grow together.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif;\">\u201cThis session was all about finding out more about how various countries address the challenges of airport cities &#8211; and how common many of those issues are.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif;\">\u201cIn some cases that were presented, such as the new airport under construction in Istanbul, there is the opportunity to build a truly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/bim-today-articles\/open-innovations-smart-city-futures\/22654\/\">integrated city<\/a> and airport that work together seamlessly, bringing huge practical and economic benefits.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif;\">\u201cHowever, in most cases we\u2019re not able to start from scratch, so the challenges are around how we can create better relationships between existing airports and the surrounding cities and infrastructure to promote mutual growth.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif;\">Alice added: \u201cOur research specifically looked into the cultural and functional relationship between the airport and the city, and whether Southampton had the potential to become an Airport City.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif;\">\u201cWe found that while constraints around the Airport currently prevent the city achieving Airport City status, there is potential for technological advancements, such as off-site control towers to overcome such constraints by unlocking land.
