According to a new report by PwC detailing for the first time the possible financial benefits of BIM, the implementation of BIM Level 2 could save the government \u00a3400m a year<\/h2>\n

PwC<\/a> has used a quantified methodology to calculate the savings on two projects, for the Department of Health<\/a> and the Department of the Environment<\/a>, and have then used these results to extrapolate across the government\u2019s capital spending programme.<\/p>\n

The report states: \u2018Interpreting quantified benefit estimates across our two projects\/assets \u2013 Foss Barrier Upgrade and the 39 Victoria Street Office Refurbishment \u2013 the gross total quantified benefits estimated were 1.5% and 3% of whole of life expenditure, respectively.<\/p>\n

\u2018We believe that this is a lower bound estimate as we were unable to estimate all benefits. These are gross estimates since our analyses have not considered the costs of implementing BIM Level 2<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u2018Across the design, build and commission, and handover phases, our quantified estimates were 0.7% and 1.4% of capital expenditure respectively. If this level of saving could be achieved across the National Infrastructure Commission\u2019s<\/a> projected public sector funded infrastructure spend of \u00a331.7bn in 2018\/19, this would imply savings to UK taxpayers of \u00a3226m-\u00a3429m (in 2017 prices).\u2019<\/p>\n

A lack of measurable financial benefits is often cited as one of the reasons clients have been reluctant to invest in BIM, and its uptake has been particularly stagnant for FM.<\/p>\n

The PwC team also applied the methodology to estimate possible future benefits that could be realised in the operational phase of maintenance planning and execution. They calculated potential savings for the Environment Agency\u2019s Foss Barrier Upgrade, which resulted in a present value total lifecycle benefit estimate of \u00a3367,693.<\/p>\n

\u2018This includes discounting at 3.5% per annum real discount rate across an appraisal period incorporating 25 full years of operations, beginning at completion of the handover phase,\u2019 says the report.<\/p>\n

The report includes a complete breakdown of this benefit estimate by lifecycle stage and benefit category.<\/p>\n
