The world’s first habitable\u00a03D-printed\u00a0homes are to be built in Eindhoven, the Netherlands \u2013\u00a0a step which developers hope will help transform the construction industry<\/h2>\n

The five 3D-printed concrete homes will be created later this year\u00a0as part of Project Milestone,\u00a0a joint venture between the Eindhoven University of Technology<\/a> and various partners who\u00a0will ensure the houses meet living standards and can be occupied.<\/p>\n

A spokesperson for the university\u00a0said: “The project is the world’s first commercial housing project based on 3D concrete printing.<\/p>\n

“The houses will all be occupied\u00a0[and] they will meet all modern comfort requirements.”<\/p>\n

It is not the first time a 3D-printed home<\/a> has been developed, although\u00a0all previous attempts have been\u00a0prototypes or part of research projects.<\/p>\n

The first house built\u00a0through Project Milestone will be single story but the team eventually hope to build houses up to three stories tall using the construction technique.<\/p>\n

Initially, parts\u00a0will be printed offsite at the university but the intention is to shift the entire operation to the construction site.<\/p>\n

The group responsible for Project Milestone previously\u00a0printed the world’s first 3D-printed\u00a0concrete bridge<\/a>, which is currently used by cyclists in the Dutch village of Gemert.<\/p>\n

The team said that the precise nature of\u00a03D-printing\u00a0means less building materials are wasted during the construction process, while also making it easier to customise houses to meet individual wishes.<\/p>\n

“3D printing of concrete is a potential game changer in the building industry,” a spokesperson for Eindhoven University of Technology said.<\/p>\n

“Besides the ability to construct almost any shape, it also enables architects to design very fine concrete structures. Another new possibility is to print all kinds, qualities and colours of concrete, all in a single product.”<\/p>\n
