{"id":42797,"date":"2018-06-22T10:31:45","date_gmt":"2018-06-22T09:31:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/?p=42797"},"modified":"2018-06-22T10:31:45","modified_gmt":"2018-06-22T09:31:45","slug":"uks-first-energy-positive-office-opens","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/energy-news\/uks-first-energy-positive-office-opens\/42797\/","title":{"rendered":"UK\u2019s first energy-positive office opens in Swansea"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>The UK\u2019s first energy-positive office, which generates more solar energy than it consumes, was opened at Swansea University yesterday (21 June)<\/h2>\n<p>Buildings currently account for around 40% of UK energy consumption.\u00a0 This new building, known as the Active Office, points the way to a new generation of low-carbon offices which produce their own supply of clean energy.<\/p>\n<p>The office was opened by Secretary of State for Wales Alun Cairns. \u00a0It was designed by <a href=\"http:\/\/specific.eu.com\/\">SPECIFIC<\/a>, a UK Innovation and Knowledge Centre led by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.swansea.ac.uk\/\">Swansea University<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The Active Office combines a range of innovative technologies that will allow it to generate, store and release solar energy in one integrated system, including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A curved roof with integrated solar cells \u2013 showing the flexible nature of the laminated photovoltaic panel;<\/li>\n<li>A Photovoltaic Thermal system on the south facing wall \u2013 which is capable of generating both heat and electricity from the sun in one system<\/li>\n<li>Lithium-ion batteries to store the electricity generated and a 2,000-litre water tank to store solar heat.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-42798 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/UK\u2019s-first-energy-positive-office-opens-in-Swansea-1-1024x640.jpg\" alt=\"Active Office\" width=\"696\" height=\"435\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/UK\u2019s-first-energy-positive-office-opens-in-Swansea-1.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/UK\u2019s-first-energy-positive-office-opens-in-Swansea-1-300x188.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/UK\u2019s-first-energy-positive-office-opens-in-Swansea-1-768x480.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/UK\u2019s-first-energy-positive-office-opens-in-Swansea-1-696x435.jpg 696w, https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/UK\u2019s-first-energy-positive-office-opens-in-Swansea-1-672x420.jpg 672w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 696px) 100vw, 696px\" \/>The \u2018buildings as power stations\u2019 concept has already been shown to work.\u00a0 Right next to the Active Office is the Active Classroom, the UK\u2019s first energy-positive classroom.\u00a0 Also built by SPECIFIC, this was recently named Project of the Year by the RICS Wales. In its first year of operation, the Active Classroom generated more than one and half times the energy it consumed.<\/p>\n<p>The Active Office and Classroom will be linked together and able to share energy with each other and electric vehicles, demonstrating how the concept could be applied in an energy-resilient solar-powered community.<\/p>\n<p>The Active Office has been designed to be easy to reproduce. It is quick to build, taking only one week to assemble, with much of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/inquiry-launched-into-off-site-manufacture-for-construction\/40024\/\">construction taking place off-site<\/a>. It also uses only technologies that are commercially available now, which means there is no reason why they could not be used on any new building.<\/p>\n<p>Kevin Bygate, chief operating officer of SPECIFIC, said: \u201cOffices are enormous consumers of energy, so turning them energy-positive has the potential to slash fuel bills and dramatically<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/energy-news\/may-vows-to-halve-energy-usage-in-new-buildings\/41613\/\"> reduce their carbon emissions<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTurning our buildings into power stations is a concept that works, as the Active Classroom shows.\u00a0 This new building will enable us to get data and evidence on how it can be applied to an office, helping us refine the design further.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Active Office is a first, but it isn\u2019t a one-off.\u00a0 It is quick to build using existing supply chains, and uses only materials that are already available. This is tomorrow\u2019s office, but it can be built today.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ian Campbell, Executive Chair of<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/organisations\/innovate-uk\"> Innovate UK<\/a>, said: \u201cIt\u2019s difficult to overstate the potential of developing a building that powers itself.
