road and rail improvements to create thousands of jobs"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>The latest figures from the\u00a0Department for Transport\u2019s analysis of future spending has shown that there will be greater investment into road and rail upgrades in the north compared to London and in the south<\/h2>\n<p>The report states that between 2018 and 2021, the government will be investing \u00a3831 per head on road and rail <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/great-north-rail-project-to-transform-travel\/35530\/\">upgrades in the north<\/a>-east, north-west and Yorkshire and the Humber.<\/p>\n<p>This is an increase of more than \u00a330 more per head than London and the south at \u00a3799.<\/p>\n<p>The figures follow Aviation Minister Baroness Sugg&#8217;s visit to Liverpool Airport ahead of attending the <a href=\"https:\/\/tps.org.uk\/events\/northern-transport-summit-2018-manchester-25th-jun\">Northern Transport Summit<\/a> in Manchester today (25th June).<\/p>\n<p>At the summit, she will reveal that the expansion of Heathrow could lead to thousands of new jobs as businesses benefit from the UK\u2019s improved connections.<\/p>\n<p>Aviation Minister Baroness Sugg said:<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We are investing more than \u00a313 billion to improve connections across the north between 2015 and 2020, getting people to their work, family and friends, quicker and easier than before.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This investment demonstrates the government\u2019s commitment to the Northern Powerhouse, which will help unlock economic growth and much-needed housing across the region.<\/p>\n<p class=\"last-child\">&#8220;And a new Heathrow runway will bring further benefits to the north, better connecting the region\u2019s airports with the UK\u2019s hub airport and opening up new trade opportunities which could deliver a further boost to the northern economy.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/news\/government-to-protect-regional-routes-to-heathrow\">government has confirmed that it is prepared to intervene to reserve slots at Heathrow for flights to airports in nations and regions around the UK<\/a>\u00a0if plans go ahead.<\/p>\n<p>More than \u00a31 billion will improve the north\u2019s rail network through the Northern and TransPennine Express franchises.<\/p>\n<p>The move will allow for 40,000 more passengers to travel on over 2,000 more services a week, with all trains replaced or refurbished by 2020.<\/p>\n<p>A further \u00a33 million government investment will improve connectivity between Manchester, Leeds and York on the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/news\/grayling-progress-on-transpennine-route-upgrade-and-crossrail-2-to-advance-in-lockstep\">Transpennine rail route.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>A greater emphasis will be paid to smart ticketing which will reduce the stress of buying\u00a0 tickets at a station.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, as part of the government\u2019s commitment to Northern Powerhouse Rail (NPR),\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/news\/north-set-to-become-first-region-in-country-to-get-new-transport-powers-from-government\">Transport for the North has been given \u00a360 million to develop proposals for the scheme<\/a>, alongside\u00a0investing \u00a3300 million to ensure <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/8m-of-extra-hs2-funding-to-deliver-woodlands-and-safer-roads\/42839\/\">HS2<\/a> can accommodate future NPR services.<\/p>\n<p>Improvements to roads have seen the last stretch of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/news\/400m-a1-upgrade-brings-safer-faster-journeys-for-drivers\">motorway-standard between Newcastle and London via the A1(M) and M1 officially opened<\/a>, which has provided quicker connections from the north-east while creating new opportunities for businesses.<\/p>\n<p>The final section of the M62 upgrade between Leeds and Manchester is expected to start construction in 2019\/20.<\/p>\n<p>Over the next three years, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/organisations\/highways-england\">Highways England<\/a> will start constructing a further 22 projects in the north including three upgrades on the M6 near Manchester, the A585 Windy Harbour to Skippool, dualling the A1 between Morpeth and Ellingham and improving junctions on the
