{"id":43242,"date":"2018-07-05T09:54:06","date_gmt":"2018-07-05T08:54:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/?p=43242"},"modified":"2022-10-19T15:34:10","modified_gmt":"2022-10-19T14:34:10","slug":"construction-sector-deal","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/construction-sector-deal\/43242\/","title":{"rendered":"Government unveil details of \u00a3420m construction sector deal"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>In further details released by the government, the construction sector deal identifies a vision to build new homes faster and a commitment to using digital technologies<\/h2>\n<p>The government\u2019s vision is a construction sector that can build new homes in weeks, or even days, instead of months; where building can be put up at just a third of their current costs; and where all new homes are affordable and energy efficient.<\/p>\n<p>At the core of the strategy is a pledge to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/bim-news\/constructing-excellence-calls-for-drastic-digital-transformation-in-construction\/37198\/\">exploit digital technologies<\/a>, such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/bim-news\/what-is-bim\/40457\/\">building information modelling (BIM)<\/a> and offsite manufacturing techniques.<\/p>\n<p>The Construction Sector Deal\u00a0is the government\u2019s reaction to the 2016 Farmer Review, which emphasised the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/report-calls-for-collaboration-to-tackle-constructions-productivity-gap\/40373\/\">UK construction\u2019s productivity shortfalls<\/a>, the unpredictability of future work and failed collaboration across the sector. It concluded that transforming the industry would require shared leadership by the industry, its clients and the government.<\/p>\n<p>The Sector Deal sets out three strategic priorities:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Digital techniques deployed at all phases of design will deliver better, more certain results during the construction and operation of buildings. Clients, design teams, construction teams and the supply chain working in unison will improve safety, quality and productivity during construction, optimise performance during the life of the building and better our ability to upgrade and ultimately dismantle and recycle buildings.<\/li>\n<li>Offsite manufacturing techniques are encouraged to reduce wastage, inefficiencies and delays that affect onsite construction.<\/li>\n<li>Whole life asset performance will shift focus from the costs of construction to the buildings life cycle costing, particularly its use of energy.
