The Builders Merchants Federation<\/a> has warned that Brexit could leave many to pay increased VAT charges upfront on European building supplies if a cooperative deal is not made between the EU and UK<\/h2>\n

This week, parliament has voted to ban the UK from upping taxes for the EU unless the EU decides to collect tax from the UK.<\/p>\n

What does this mean for the UK?<\/h3>\n

If the UK and EU do not decide on a mutually benefiting customs arrangement, then the UK could be forced to pay increased VAT for imports and will have to pay the amount upfront before any goods including highly sought-after timber, leave EU ports.<\/p>\n

Foreseeing the implications this could bring, The Builders Merchants Federation has warned the construction industry of increased costs and prices, implications for cash flow and detrimental effects that these impacts will bring to the UK housing market which heavily relies on EU imports<\/a> of timber, bricks and paint.<\/p>\n

A whopping 60% of timber used in the UK comes from EU countries such as Sweden, Finland and Latvia and carries an additional cost of \u00a31 billion. For bricks imported from Belgium and Holland, post-Brexit<\/a> costs could equate to more than \u00a3160 million, and paint sent from across the EU is expected to add on costs of \u00a380 million post-Brexit.<\/p>\n

John Newcomb, Chief Executive of the BMF, said: \u201cMerchants already face significant cost increases due to rising world prices and currency fluctuations involving sterling. Paying 20% more due to VAT rules will hit builders\u2019 merchants hard\u201d.<\/p>\n

The Builders Merchants Federation (BMF) is known worldwide for representing and protecting the interests of plumbers, heating specalists, builders merchants, roofers, decorators, timber merchants and their suppliers.<\/p>\n
