{"id":43672,"date":"2018-07-19T12:58:19","date_gmt":"2018-07-19T11:58:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/?p=43672"},"modified":"2018-07-19T12:58:19","modified_gmt":"2018-07-19T11:58:19","slug":"construction-need-to-appoint-more-women","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/hr-skills-news\/construction-need-to-appoint-more-women\/43672\/","title":{"rendered":"Construction companies need to appoint more women to build gender diversity"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Women Count 2018 found that in the last three years there has been no progress on gender diversity in senior roles in the FTSE 350 \u2013 and by some measures, it is going backwards<\/h2>\n<p>Women Count is the third annual report by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.execpipeline.com\/\">The Pipeline<\/a>, which tracks and analyses the number of women on Executive Committees of FTSE 350 companies. The report found that:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The ratio of women on Executive Committees of FTSE 350 companies has stayed the same at only 16% since the first report three years ago.<\/li>\n<li>95% of all P&amp;L roles on Executive Committees are held by men and just 5% by women, a decrease on last year \u2013 most women instead perform \u2018functional\u2019 roles such as HR, marketing, legal or compliance.<\/li>\n<li>The percentage of women executives on main boards has flatlined at 8% between 2017 and 2018. This means 92% are still held by men.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Representation on Executive Committees, unlike representation on Boards, is the best measure of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/hr-skills-news\/csic-leads-the-way-for-diversity-with-new-board-appointments\/42653\/\">gender equality<\/a> in the FTSE 350 because executives have power in the running of a company.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-43677 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/Construction-companies-need-to-appoint-more-women-to-build-gender-diversity.png\" alt=\"Women Count 2018\" width=\"780\" height=\"199\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/Construction-companies-need-to-appoint-more-women-to-build-gender-diversity.png 780w, https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/Construction-companies-need-to-appoint-more-women-to-build-gender-diversity-300x77.png 300w, https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/Construction-companies-need-to-appoint-more-women-to-build-gender-diversity-768x196.png 768w, https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/Construction-companies-need-to-appoint-more-women-to-build-gender-diversity-696x178.png 696w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 780px) 100vw, 780px\" \/>There has been progress in this sector, as they have seen a big increase in percentage of FTSE350 companies with 25% or more female representation on Executive Committees (2017 had 6% and this year had 36%), however the same number of companies that have 25% or more representation of women, have no women at all.<\/p>\n<p>On average this sector has 13% representation of women on their Executive Committee and construction companies will struggle to improve the ratios both on Executive Committees and Boards whilst they have one of the lowest representations of women in P&amp;L (profit &amp; loss) roles (4%).<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>13% representation of women on their Executive Committees<\/li>\n<li>4% representation of women in P&amp;L roles on their Executive Committees<\/li>\n<li>7% representation of women as Executive Directors on their Boards<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Analysis from the report also demonstrated the economic benefits for companies who have women in more senior roles.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>There is a \u00a313bn gender dividend on offer for UK plc, if all FTSE 350 companies performed at the same level as those with women on their executive committees.<\/li>\n<li>FTSE 350 companies with no women on their executive committee only achieve an average 8.9% net profit margin. Where there are at least 25% women on executive committees, average net profit margins soar by 5%, to 13.9%.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The report also found that female CEOs are instrumental in recruiting more women to senior positions.<\/p>\n<p>Rt Hon Nicky Morgan MP, Chair of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.parliament.uk\/business\/committees\/committees-a-z\/commons-select\/treasury-committee\/\">Treasury Select Committee<\/a> said:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWomen Count 2018 gives us the proof that having more women on executive committees boosts profitability. It unpacks in forensic detail the status of women in FTSE 350 firms, the number of women on executive committees, and the correlation between female representation and economic performance.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis lack of progress calls into serious question the possibility of achieving the UK\u2019s target of 33% by 2020 which I set in response to the Davies Report, as Minister for Women and Equalities in 2015. Businesses that don\u2019t understand the need to appoint more senior executive women\u00a0are failing to meet their full potential. I ask them to read this report and wake up to reality, in their own interests and the country\u2019s interests.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Philip Hampton, Chair of the Hampton-Alexander Review on FTSE Women Leaders, an independent review on improving gender balance in FTSE leadership, commented:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis research shows again that we still have relatively few women in the most senior executive roles across business in the UK.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are continuing to make progress on women becoming non-executives on boards, but the top executive positions are still largely male. I think it\u2019s excellent that The Pipeline\u2019s report is focused on executive committees.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe next Hampton Alexander report in November 2018 will also measure the gender mix of executive committees and the senior people who report to executive committee members.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lorna Fitzsimons, Co-founder of The Pipeline added:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are at a critical juncture for gender equality in the workplace and this report has issued a stark warning. This is an alarm bell for everyone who supports the Hampton-Alexander recommendation to Government to achieve 33% representation of women on FTSE 100 executive committees and their direct reports by 2020.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGovernment and business leaders must sit up and take notice. If we carry on as we have been doing \u2013 we will miss these targets. This doesn\u2019t just fail women but it fails us all and our economy too.
