Community Land Trusts (CLTs) can build the affordable houses rural communities need, says charity in response to the Campaign to Protect Rural England’s (CPRE) report on the green belt<\/h2>\n

In the latest report from Campaign to Protect Rural England<\/a>, it has been revealed that only 990 of the 7,600 homes rural communities need were built last year.<\/p>\n

Communities are forming Community Land Trusts<\/a> to build genuinely affordable housing that meets local need. With 840 CLT homes built to date, predominantly in rural areas, this number is set to grow thanks to the Government\u2019s \u00a3163m Community Housing Fund<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Tom Chance, Director at the National CLT Network<\/a>, said: \u201cCommunity Land Trusts are thriving in rural areas. This is because local people have recognised them as a way to build the affordable homes that local people can actually afford, rather than more expensive homes.<\/p>\n

\u201cMany rural communities are coming up against school and shop closures that are threatening local life. The need for affordable housing has never been more serious. While many local authorities and parish councils are supporting CLTs to form and develop, we would like to see this going further.<\/p>\n

\u201cWith local governments working with groups to find land there\u2019s no reason why CLTs couldn\u2019t help build the annual quota of rural homes needed.\u201d<\/p>\n

A\u00a0community land trust is a non-profit organisation that develops affordable housing, community gardens, civic buildings, commercial spaces and other community assets on behalf of a community. CLTs balance the requirements of individuals to access land and maintain security of tenure with a community\u2019s need to maintain affordability, economic diversity and local access to essential services.<\/p>\n
