{"id":45108,"date":"2018-08-17T15:24:36","date_gmt":"2018-08-17T14:24:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/?p=45108"},"modified":"2018-08-24T15:13:18","modified_gmt":"2018-08-24T14:13:18","slug":"younger-generation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/younger-generation\/45108\/","title":{"rendered":"Construction industry calls for younger generation to join the sector"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"section0\" class=\"section fp-section fp-table\" data-anchor=\"Introduction\">\n<div class=\"fp-tableCell\">\n<header class=\"header\">\n<div class=\"container-fluid\">\n<div class=\"row\">\n<div class=\"col-sm-12\">\n<nav class=\"navbar navbar-default\">\n<div class=\"navbar-header\">\n<h2 class=\"bph_logo\">According to recent research from\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.arcadis.com\/en\/global\/\">Arcadis<\/a>, Britain&#8217;s construction sector needs younger generations to join the industry to meet growing demands<\/h2>\n<p>The research suggests that a whopping 400,000 people need to be hired each year until 2021 to work in line with the country&#8217;s housing and infrastructure needs.<\/p>\n<p>With Britain&#8217;s exit from the European Union looming closer and closer as the days roll by, and whilst our ageing workforce struggle to meet new demands, now has never been a better time to encourage younger people to take up a career in construction to close the skills gap.<\/p>\n<p>However, experts agree that promoting more apprenticeships could be a possible solution to reducing the skills shortage.<\/p>\n<p>The CCS Best Practice \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/ccsbestpractice.org.uk\/spotlight-on\/spotlight-on-the-next-generation\/\">Spotlight on\u2026the next generation<\/a>\u2019 provides information and resources to help tackle the skills shortage and aims to encourage more young people into the profession.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/nav>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/header>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"section1\" class=\"section section_bg_1 fp-section fp-table active fp-completely\" data-anchor=\"the_campaign\">\n<div class=\"fp-tableCell\">\n<div class=\"slimScrollDiv\">\n<div class=\"fp-scrollable\">\n<div class=\"slo-cont-half\">\n<div class=\"slo-scroll\">\n<div class=\"slo-scroll-text\">\n<p>A\u00a02015\/16 survey\u00a0of 2,000 British adults found that 67% would not consider working in construction.<\/p>\n<p>Poor perceptions can partly be blamed on construction\u2019s long-running image problem. Reasons putting many off the sector include poor image, low pay, job security and lack of profession and can all be found in The\u00a0Construction 2025 report (2013) and the Construction 2030 and Beyond report (2015).<\/p>\n<p>Teachers and parents may pass on negative views of the industry to children, with 35% of careers advisors\u00a0saying a career in construction is unattractive and four in ten\u00a0parents\u00a0stating they would not encourage their children to join the industry.<\/p>\n<p>Efforts to attract the next generation should focus on recasting construction in a positive light; not only is it a professional industry with varied job opportunities for talented individuals, but construction helps shape communities and improve people\u2019s lives. The use of innovative technologies and the rise of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/bim-news\/bim-technology\/44794\/\">BIM<\/a> are key ways to attract the interest of young people who have grown up in a digital world.<\/p>\n<p>Changing perceptions of construction is half the battle but adequate training provision needs to be in place to support young people who choose to enter the industry. Comprehensive training programmes provide structured career progression, demonstrating that construction is a professional industry and, in turn, attracts more young people into construction.<\/p>\n<p>However, efforts and schemes are being put into place to change the perception of the industry.<\/p>\n<p>The Considerate Constructors Scheme is an initiative which aims to improve the image of construction and registered sites.<\/p>\n<p>The Scheme surveyed nearly 800 industry professionals to discover opinions surrounding the reputation of the construction industry. Findings from the researched showed:<\/p>\n<div class=\"well well-blue\">\n<ul>\n<li><strong>85%<\/strong>\u00a0would recommend construction careers to young people.<\/li>\n<li><strong>84%<\/strong>\u00a0cited the perception of construction being manual work as the main reason it is not a popular career choice.<\/li>\n<li><strong>77%<\/strong>\u00a0said the skills shortage is the most pressing issue facing the construction industry.<\/li>\n<li><strong>72%<\/strong>\u00a0cited the challenging nature of work as the main benefit of a construction career.<\/li>\n<li><strong>69%<\/strong>\u00a0said the industry is not doing enough to attract the next generation of workers.<\/li>\n<li><strong>53%<\/strong>\u00a0know young people who are, or could be, interested in a construction career.<\/li>\n<li>On the subject of what the industry can do to attract the next generation,\u00a0<strong>37%\u00a0<\/strong>mentioned changing perceptions\/promoting benefits,\u00a0<strong>26%<\/strong>\u00a0suggested engaging schools and colleges and\u00a0<strong>15%<\/strong>\u00a0mentioned apprenticeships and training.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<p>Considerate Constructors Scheme Chief Executive Edward Hardy said: &#8220;The shortage of new entrants in to the workforce is one of the most pressing issues facing the construction industry. With over 400,000 new recruits needed each year to deliver construction projects we must all take steps to attract the next generation.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;While we do have a great industry, one that is working hard to improve its image \u2013 as evidenced by the fact that 85% of those within the industry would recommend a career in construction \u2013 we need to do so much more to continually improve our standards in order to drive the perception change much needed to make the industry more attractive.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The Scheme\u2019s Best Practice Hub is at the epicentre of helping to share best practice across construction.
