The country\u2019s first Safety, Health and Environment (SHE) apprenticeship has been launched by construction contractors<\/h2>\n

The safety, health and environment apprenticeship initiative has been developed to provide a pipeline of skilled staff to manage the risks in the workplace. It is designed to address the impact that changes in technology and innovation are having on business working practices.<\/p>\n

The creation of the new qualification was led by a working group comprising of contractors including Costain<\/a>, Skanska<\/a>, Balfour Beatty<\/a>, Mitie<\/a>, Morrison Utilities<\/a> and Sisk<\/a>, along with client organisations such as HS2 and Thames Water. Their work was supported by the Institute of Occupational Safety & Health<\/a>, the Unite trades union<\/a> and others.<\/p>\n

The first group of 20 apprentices across all industries have started their apprenticeships with another 160 set to follow shortly.<\/p>\n

Two of those will be working with Costain on its A-one+ Joint Venture in Kent starting next month.<\/p>\n

Ian Nixon, highway and nuclear sector SHE manager at Costain, said: \u201cTechnological innovation is transforming the workplace across every industry.<\/p>\n

\u201cEvery business is placing a premium on those employees who have the expertise and abilities to assess the operational risks of these new technologies and implement steps to ensure that staff can manage them safely and securely.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat is why, in partnership with colleagues from across many different sectors, we have developed England\u2019s first SHE apprenticeship.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis new scheme will equip trainees with the knowledge, expertise and skills needed to mitigate safety risks and help businesses manage any areas of potential harm to employees.\u201d<\/p>\n

The SHE apprenticeship<\/a> is a level three qualification which is the equivalent of two A Levels and allows apprentices to learn while they earn \u2013 20% of their time will be spent on additional off the job training.<\/p>\n
