{"id":45862,"date":"2018-08-23T08:50:27","date_gmt":"2018-08-23T07:50:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/?p=45862"},"modified":"2018-08-23T08:50:27","modified_gmt":"2018-08-23T07:50:27","slug":"fmb-construction-career","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/hr-skills-news\/fmb-construction-career\/45862\/","title":{"rendered":"FMB urge young people to consider construction as a career"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Half of the UK\u2019s 18-24 year olds feel pressurised into to going to university, with this age group being four times more likely to experience pressure to study for a degree than +55 year olds, according to new research by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fmb.org.uk\/\">Federation of Master Builders (FMB)<\/a><\/h2>\n<p>Key results from the FMB\u2019s research into people\u2019s attitudes about university include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Half of 18-24 year olds felt pressurised by parents, teachers, friends, and\/or society in general, to go to university;<\/li>\n<li>The younger the generation, the more likely they were to have felt pressurised into attending university:\n<ul>\n<li>12% of +55 year olds felt pressured to go to university;<\/li>\n<li>23% of 45-54 year olds felt pressured to go to university;<\/li>\n<li>30% of 35-44 year olds felt pressured to go to university;<\/li>\n<li>40% of 25-34 year olds felt pressured to go to university;<\/li>\n<li>50% of 18-24 year olds felt pressured to go to university.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Commenting on the research, Brian Berry, Chief Executive of the FMB, said: \u201cIt is deeply concerning that half of the nation\u2019s young people felt pressurised into going to university.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIndeed, this new research shows a pattern: the younger the generation, the more likely they were to feel pressurised into studying for a degree. In the past, academic education was often favoured over vocational studies but this view was always questionable and is now outdated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith GCSE results having just been published, we are urging students to give other career paths such as vocational training and apprenticeships serious consideration. A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/hr-skills-news\/standards-in-construction-new-apprenticeships\/31581\/\">construction apprenticeship<\/a> can lead to a fulfilling and rewarding career.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur recent research showed that the average university graduate in England earns \u00a332,000 a year whereas your average bricklayer or roofer is earning \u00a342,000 a year.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Berry concluded: \u201cThe construction industry is facing a severe <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/hr-skills-news\/skills-shortage-in-construction-sector\/43629\/\">skills shortage<\/a> and it\u2019s therefore of utmost importance that more young people join the sector.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are calling on all parents and teachers to encourage those who are finding out their GCSE results today to consider a career in construction. We know that nearly all of the key trades have become harder to recruit in the second quarter of this year compared to the previous three months.
