{"id":45978,"date":"2018-08-28T14:39:19","date_gmt":"2018-08-28T13:39:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/?p=45978"},"modified":"2018-08-28T14:39:19","modified_gmt":"2018-08-28T13:39:19","slug":"young-engineers-awards","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/hr-skills-news\/young-engineers-awards\/45978\/","title":{"rendered":"CIBSE unveil shortlist for Young Engineers\u2019 Awards"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Eight graduates and six employers have made the shortlist in this year\u2019s Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers (CIBSE) Young Engineers\u2019 Awards<\/h2>\n<p>The CIBSE Young Engineers\u2019 Awards is sponsored by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.andrewswaterheaters.co.uk\/\">Andrews Water Heaters<\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kingspan.com\/gb\/en-gb\/about-kingspan\/kingspan-industrial-insulation\">Kingspan Industrial Insulation<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/swegonair.co.uk\/\">Swegon Air Management<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cibse.org\/networks\/cibse-patrons\">CIBSE Patrons<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The Awards celebrate the industry\u2019s shining stars of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/hr-skills-news\/highways-england-inspires-young-people-into-engineering\/39503\/\">young engineering talent<\/a>, recognising the individuals whose academic and professional achievements set them apart from their peers and identify them as the stars of the engineering profession in the next generation.<\/p>\n<p>Not surprisingly, recognition in these awards is regarded as one of the highest accolades in the sector.\u00a0 Equally important are the employers whose award celebrates the organisations with progressive strategies for recruiting, nurturing and empowering young people.<\/p>\n<h3>Finalists for the CIBSE ASHRAE Graduate of the Year award are:<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Waqar Ahmed, Hurley Palmer Flatt and University of Surrey;<\/li>\n<li>Rachel Bell, Atkins and Manchester University;<\/li>\n<li>Reanna Evans, NG Bailey and Leeds Beckett University;<\/li>\n<li>Carl Fisher, Royal School of Military Engineering;<\/li>\n<li>Josh Hunt, AECOM and University of the West of England;<\/li>\n<li>Hannah Muller-Jones, Buro Happold and University of Nottingham;<\/li>\n<li>Gemma Taylor, Atkins and University of the West of England;<\/li>\n<li>Ryan Wesley, Tata Steel Europe and Loughborough University.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>The CIBSE Employer of the Year shortlist is:<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Small category:<\/strong><br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sisealy.co.uk\/\">S I Sealy &amp; Associates<\/a><br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sdsolution.co.uk\/\">Services Design Solutions Limited (SDS)<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Medium category:<\/strong><br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.integralgroup.com\/elementa\/\">Elementa<\/a><br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.bw-engineering.com\/\">Black &amp; White Engineering<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Large category:<\/strong><br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aecom.com\/\">AECOM<\/a><br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/hoarelea.com\/\">Hoare Lea<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The final will be held at the London headquarters of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) on 11 October. Where the CIBSE ASHRAE Graduate finalists will be judged on a five-minute presentation addressing the topic: \u2018<em>Recent events have raised questions about how the industry manages and monitors professional competence and upholds technical standards. What does this mean to you as an engineer and where does the engineer\u2019s responsibility begin and end?<\/em>\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Chair of judges Tim Dwyer CEng FCIBSE said: \u201cIt is great to see the award continuing to attract such interest and such a consistently high standard of entries in its 23<sup>rd<\/sup> year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOnce again we have eight exceptional candidates ready to compete for one of the top accolades available to young engineers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This year\u2019s Graduate winner will enjoy a fully paid for trip to the ASHRAE Winter Meeting in Atlanta. The second and third placed graduates receive \u00a3600 and \u00a3300 respectively from the Rumford Club and every other finalist receives \u00a3100 from the Manly Charitable Trust.<\/p>\n<p>Kevin Mitchell, chair of the CIBSE Employer of the Year judging panel and the first ever winner of the Graduate Award, said entries had been particularly difficult to separate: \u201cThe standard was very high, which is extremely heartening in light of the sector\u2019s ongoing battle with skills shortages.<\/p>\n<p>The CIBSE Young Engineers\u2019 Awards event is free to attend, but pre-registration is required.
