phase 2 boss quits as northern stretch delayed for a year"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>HS2 phase 2 managing director Paul Griffiths is stepping down from the \u00a356bn northern stretch of HS2 and moving to take on the role of program director at the $40bn Metrolinx program in Toronto<\/h2>\n<p>The announcement that\u00a0Griffiths is stepping down three years after joining the high-speed rail scheme comes amid reports that the Bill required to allow construction of the railway from Crewe to Manchester and Birmingham to Leeds has been delayed for 12 months.<\/p>\n<p>The legislation allowing the lines to be built will now be postponed until 2020, although Government said the pause would not impact on the 2033 completion date.<\/p>\n<p>However, the move has raised\u00a0fears that MPs calling for HS2 phase 2 to be scrapped to save money may be gaining ground in Whitehall.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/organisations\/department-for-transport\">Department for Transport<\/a> confirmed that the bill was being paused to enable the northern section to be linked into the main east-west railway line across the Pennines, presently still at early planning stage.<\/p>\n<p>Griffiths will leave <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/extra-hs2-funding-deliver-woodlands-safer-roads\/42839\/\">HS2<\/a> at the end of December and plans are now in full-force to find his successor.<\/p>\n<p>Griffiths said:\u00a0\u201cSeeing HS2 move considerably closer to reality has been a privilege and will always have a special place in my career. \u00a0HS2 is vital for the future of Britain and I will always be proud to have been part of its development.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hs2.org.uk\/\">HS2\u2019s<\/a> CEO Mark Thurston said:<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\u201cPhase Two has come a long way under Paul\u2019s leadership.\u00a02a, the section from Birmingham to Crewe, is already in Parliament and\u00a0is on course to receive Royal Assent next year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPhase 2b, the section from Birmingham to Leeds and from Crewe to Manchester,\u00a0is well advanced in terms of its preparation for Parliament, particularly how it integrates with the existing network and the plans of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/road-rail-improvements-creates-jobs\/42850\/\">Northern Powerhouse Rail<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>HS2\u2019s Chairman, Sir Terry Morgan added:<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\u201cGiven its sheer scale and duration, changes of personnel and leadership are inevitable in a project such as HS2 \u2013 particularly given the global demand for talented and experienced engineers such as Paul \u2013 but our focus remains on delivering a railway for the long term future of this country. \u00a0And that we will do.\u201d<\/p>\n<div
