building safety and to create a commonwealth games legacy<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"column-two-thirds\">\n<p class=\"gem-c-lead-paragraph \">The measures include:<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"grid-row\">\n<div class=\"column-two-thirds content-bottom-margin\">\n<div class=\"responsive-bottom-margin\">\n<div class=\"gem-c-govspeak govuk-govspeak direction-ltr\">\n<div class=\"govspeak\">\n<ul>\n<li>A new Homes Ombudsman to support homebuyers facing problems with their newly built home,<\/li>\n<li>plans to help provide the homes the country needs through planning reform,<\/li>\n<li>plans to create a lasting legacy from the 2022 Commonwealth Games,<\/li>\n<li>measures to improve the safety of high-rise buildings.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The New Homes Ombudsman will protect the interests of homebuyers and hold developers to account when things go wrong.<\/p>\n<p>The measures will assist the government&#8217;s plans to deliver 300,000 homes a year by the mid-2020s by making better use of vacant land and buildings.<\/p>\n<p>Local authorities will also receive additional freedom to make the most of existing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/cpre-identify-brownfield-land-for-more-than-1-million-homes\/38480\/\">brownfield land<\/a> and dispose of surplus land that could instead accommodate new homes.<\/p>\n<p>To support the 2022 Commonwealth Games and local communities once the games are over, \u00a3165m has been granted to produce 5,100 homes in Birmingham and infrastructure to support the homes.<\/p>\n<p>With construction due to begin in 2019, the government will work with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wmca.org.uk\/\">West Midlands Combined Authority<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.birmingham.gov.uk\/\">Birmingham City council<\/a> to support these ambitious plans.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, to further building safety measures throughout the industry following the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/health-safety-news\/safety-council-hackitt\/44301\/\">Grenfell Tower tragedy<\/a>, the government has announced that they will ban the use of combustible materials on external walls of high-rise buildings.<\/p>\n<p>The ban will extend to cover care homes, hospitals and student accommodations over 18 metres high.<\/p>\n<p>This ban will be delivered through changes to building regulations guidance and will limit materials available to products achieving a European classification of Class A1 or A2.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"mk-custom-module-container\">\n<\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The government has announced new measures to
