Bristol City Council<\/a> has identified sites\u00a0available across the city to test and deliver innovative and affordable modular housing solutions\u00a0over the next five years<\/h2>\n

Councillor Paul Smith,\u00a0who made the announcement\u00a0to an audience of 300\u00a0at the Bristol Housing Festival\u2019s launch at City Hall, also committed the council to investing in six\u00a0rapid-build, modular homes from ZEDPods<\/a> to be put up on\u00a0one\u00a0of the sites and offered to people in housing crisis<\/a> within six months, subject to planning.<\/p>\n

Some of the sites that will be used would normally be seen as undeliverable using conventional housing development methods. However, the Festival will use them as test sites to prototype better ways of living\u00a0in the city which\u00a0has a serious\u00a0housing shortage. \u202fAn average two-bedroom house in Bristol\u00a0costs \u00a3222,000 last year compared to \u00a360,000 in 1990. Each night, around 500 families with children are\u00a0staying in temporary\u00a0accommodation.<\/p>\n

Smith,\u00a0who is\u00a0Cabinet Member for Housing,\u00a0said: \u201cThe council is completely behind the Bristol Housing Festival<\/a>. We\u00a0will support them in using the city as a laboratory for housing innovation,\u00a0making available\u00a0a\u00a0variety of sites. Some\u00a0of these will seem \u2018impossible\u2019\u00a0\u2013 some\u00a0will be\u00a0between,\u00a0on top of\u00a0or even underneath\u00a0existing buildings.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo, we are inviting\u00a0ideas from all over the\u00a0world\u00a0and\u00a0saying\u00a0let’s be imaginative, let\u2019s challenge, and let\u2019s be prepared, if necessary,\u00a0to fail and try again.\u201d<\/p>\n

Homes that are manufactured offsite, such as ZEDPods, are particularly suitable for challenging sites, as they can be delivered and then put up quickly, sometimes in as little as a day.<\/p>\n

Jez Sweetland, the Festival’s Project Lead said: \u201cWe have systemic\u00a0failure\u00a0in housing \u2013 it’s not working for this city, for our nation and around the world. We need courage\u00a0to work\u00a0together\u00a0to think\u00a0differently\u00a0and\u00a0prototype and start\u00a0again.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are full of admiration for\u00a0the\u00a0Council\u2019s\u00a0political\u00a0courage in supporting the festival.\u00a0It\u00a0is not about having all the answers \u2013 instead,\u00a0the festival\u00a0is about trying out new ideas and re-imagining better ways to live in our cities.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mayor Rees, who also spoke at the launch event, added: \u201cThe festival can turn the\u00a0city into a living exhibition of the latest and most innovative approaches to housing and finding the best way of tackling our housing crisis<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is not just about homes, but about communities too, and solving wide social challenges such as social isolation and\u202fmental health\u00a0issues\u202fthrough housing.\u201d<\/p>\n

The ZEDPods<\/a> are on display at the Festival\u2019s launch\u00a0exhibition, along with a range of other alternative and affordable housing prototypes.<\/p>\n

The free\u00a0exhibition, which opened on 19\u00a0October and runs until 4\u00a0November,\u00a0has already\u00a0attracted more than 2,500\u00a0visitors.\u00a0Exhibits also include\u202fmodular two-storey homes from Totally Modular<\/a>; a modular apartment from Tempo Housing<\/a>;\u202fa single storey unit from We Can Make<\/a>; and shipping container home conversions from ISO Spaces<\/a> and Help Bristol\u2019s\u00a0Homeless<\/a>, as well as\u00a0scale-models and cutting-edge tech such as virtual reality games and a robot.<\/p>\n
