are not fulfilling their responsibilities<\/h1>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"column-two-thirds\">\n<p class=\"gem-c-lead-paragraph \">The Housing Minister, Heather Wheeler MP hopes the \u00a32 million in funding will protect renters from rogue landlords and will improve overall standards of living in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/private-rental-sector-renting-revolution\/48283\/\">rental sector<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"grid-row\">\n<div class=\"column-two-thirds content-bottom-margin\">\n<div class=\"responsive-bottom-margin\">\n<div class=\"gem-c-govspeak govuk-govspeak direction-ltr\">\n<div class=\"govspeak\">\n<p>Despite the amount of landlords in the UK who do provide satisfactory homes for their tenants, a minority still continue to break the law and offer unsafe <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/modern-construction-london-housing-crisis\/48618\/\">housing<\/a> to young families and others vulnerable to exploitation.<\/p>\n<p>The new funding will assist councils to step up enforcement action against these landlords and will go towards developing more methods to clamp down on inadequate accommodation.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/ministers\/minister-of-state-minister-for-housing\">Housing Minister<\/a>, Heather Wheeler, MP said: &#8220;Everyone deserves to live in a home that is safe and secure, and it is vital we crack down on the small minority of landlords who are not giving their tenants this security.<\/p>\n<p class=\"last-child\">&#8220;This funding will help further strengthen councils\u2019 powers to tackle rogue landlords and ensure that poor-quality homes in their area are improved, making the housing market fairer for everyone.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Local councils and authorities already have the power to issue fines and banning orders to deter landlords from passing up on their responsibilities.<\/p>\n<p>However, the new funding will go further and will support a range of projects that councils have already said will help them.<\/p>\n<p>These include building relationships with external organisations such as the emergency services, legal services and local housing advocates.<\/p>\n<p>The money will also be used to encourage councils to share best practice of enforcement action and examples of innovative approaches that are self-sustaining and can be easily adapted to other parts of the country.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"further-information\">Did you know&#8230;<\/h2>\n<p>There are more than 4.5 million households in the UK&#8217;s private rental sector, of which 82% of renters are happy with their home.<\/p>\n<p>However, the fund will target those living in sub par housing and will help local authorities tackle the challenges caused by rogue landlords which make it difficult to improve standards.<\/p>\n<p>The funding will go towards improving:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>the need for better information \u2013 on housing stock and on rogue landlords and agents operating in their areas<\/li>\n<li>data sharing between authorities and agencies \u2013 identifying and bringing together different data sets to enable better enforcement targeting<\/li>\n<li>internal \u2018ways of working\u2019 \u2013 improving housing-specific legal expertise, in-house communication between teams, and tools and strategies to effectively implement policy<\/li>\n<li>innovative software \u2013 for enforcement officers to record their findings, gather evidence and streamline the enforcement
