{"id":50059,"date":"2018-12-11T10:05:28","date_gmt":"2018-12-11T10:05:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/?p=50059"},"modified":"2018-12-11T10:05:28","modified_gmt":"2018-12-11T10:05:28","slug":"engineering-firm-fined","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/health-safety-news\/engineering-firm-fined\/50059\/","title":{"rendered":"Engineering firm fined after worker suffers head injury"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>An engineering firm has been fined \u00a316,000 after a worker suffered a serious head injury whilst assembling a steel frame<\/h2>\n<p>Kidderminster Magistrates\u2019 Court heard how, on 12 March 2018, a Quantum Engineering Developments Limited employee was injured when a steel frame he was assembling came off two supporting battens and fell on him pinning his head to the floor. The worker suffered a fractured skull and nerve damage as a result.<\/p>\n<p>An investigation by the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hse.gov.uk\/\">Health and Safety Executive<\/a> (HSE) revealed that the company did not have a safe system of work in place and there were no risk assessments for assembly work.<\/p>\n<p>The engineering firm also failed to provide information, instruction and training regarding the risks of working below heavy components and the precautions necessary to ensure safety.\u00a0 The steel frame should have been securely mounted on wheels to keep it safe when employees worked below it, but at the time of the incident it had been supported on wooden battens.<\/p>\n<p>Quantum Engineering Developments Limited of Worcestershire pleaded guilty to breaching <a href=\"https:\/\/www.legislation.gov.uk\/ukpga\/1974\/37\/section\/2\">section 2(1) of the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974<\/a> and has been fined \u00a316,000 and ordered to pay costs of \u00a31,687.75.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking after the case, HSE inspector Alastair Mitchell said: \u201cThis case highlights the importance of assessing risks in assembly work and the need to ensure safe systems of work when carrying out tasks below heavy components.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cQuantum Engineering Developments Limited failed to assess the risks and had not instructed their employees about safe systems of work to be used.
