{"id":50255,"date":"2018-12-17T16:05:57","date_gmt":"2018-12-17T16:05:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/?p=50255"},"modified":"2019-01-30T12:52:38","modified_gmt":"2019-01-30T12:52:38","slug":"unite-carillion-style-collapses","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/unite-carillion-style-collapses\/50255\/","title":{"rendered":"Unite launches blueprint to tackle Carillion-style collapses"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>The UK\u2019s largest union, <a href=\"https:\/\/unitetheunion.org\/\">Unite<\/a>, has launched a blueprint in the hopes of tackling bandit capitalism in the UK economy and putting an end to future Carillion-style collapses<\/h2>\n<p>The document\u2019s publication is especially timely given the growing fears that outsourcing giant Interserve could suffer a Carillion-style collapse.<\/p>\n<p>The document<em>\u00a0Ending bandit capitalism: Learning the lessons from Carillion\u2019s collapse<\/em>\u00a0covers a package of measures designed to introduce better regulations and stricter rules to prevent companies being able to exaggerate their accounts and provide an entirely false trading position, which had disastrous consequences for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/construction-firm-insolvency-rise-carillion\/47821\/\">Carillion<\/a> and its workforce.<\/p>\n<p>The comprehensive report for the first time details the sorry saga and circumstances of Carillion\u2019s collapse and the role played by the directors, the government and its auditors, in the company\u2019s demise.<\/p>\n<p>There are further chapters which examine the outsourcing of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/prompt-payment-initiative\/49733\/\">public sector contracts<\/a> and how the construction industry is organised, which were both major contributory factors in Carillion\u2019s demise.<\/p>\n<p>The document also studies the circumstances which resulted in Carillion\u2019s pension fund being bailed out by the pension protection fund and the legal consequences as a result of the company entering compulsory liquidation, making it particularly challenging for the thousands of workers who lost their jobs to seek compensation.<\/p>\n<p>Unite assistant general secretary Gail Cartmail said: \u201cThis document is designed to set out the many factors that led to Carillion\u2019s collapse and to ensure that the bandits are chased out of UK plc.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat is too often forgotten when company\u2019s collapse is that thousands of workers both directly employed by the company and in their supply chain lose their jobs, through absolutely no fault of their own.
