{"id":50627,"date":"2019-01-07T12:17:21","date_gmt":"2019-01-07T12:17:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/?p=50627"},"modified":"2019-01-30T12:56:11","modified_gmt":"2019-01-30T12:56:11","slug":"manchester-housing-transport","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/manchester-housing-transport\/50627\/","title":{"rendered":"Greater Manchester leaders outline radical housing plans"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Greater Manchester\u2019s leaders have set out radical housing and transport plans to ensure the city-region can thrive despite the national uncertainty posed by Brexit<\/h2>\n<p>At a special event\u00a0today (7 January), Mayor Andy Burnham, alongside Deputy Mayors Sir Richard Leese and Bev Hughes, and the leaders of Greater Manchester councils, outlined a series of bold and far-reaching new housing and transport proposals that showcase the region as a confident, ambitious hub which places its people at its heart.<\/p>\n<p>Greater Manchester&#8217;s Plan for Jobs, Homes and the Environment \u2013 the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greatermanchester-ca.gov.uk\/GMSF\">Greater Manchester Spatial Framework<\/a> (GMSF)\u00a0\u2013 has been radically rewritten.<\/p>\n<p>The plan focuses on making the most of Greater Manchester\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/could-2018-be-the-tipping-point-for-brownfield-sites\/39380\/\">brownfield sites<\/a>, prioritising redevelopment of town centres and other sustainable locations. It will also help to address the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/community-led-housing\/50005\/\">housing crisis<\/a> with a minimum target of 50,000 additional affordable homes \u2013 30,000 of which will be social housing.<\/p>\n<p>The net loss of green belt has been reduced by more than half. And \u2013 as an illustration of the radical approach that Greater Manchester is taking to environmental policy \u2013 the city-region is making clear its<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/manchester-against-fracking\/50598\/\"> opposition to fracking<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In a UK first, Mayoral powers are to be used to regenerate a major town centre. Burnham is to work with Stockport Council to consult on bringing forward a\u00a0Mayoral Development Corporation (MDC)\u00a0for the town. It is the first time MDC powers have been used to regenerate a town centre.<\/p>\n<p>During the special event, leaders also outlined:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>plans for\u00a0transport links\u00a0for people to get around the city-region<\/li>\n<li>improvements to the\u00a0environment\u00a0to clean up our air, and<\/li>\n<li>new opportunities\u00a0for people to access great jobs by attracting the best companies and building our citizens\u2019 skills.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Other major announcements around\u00a0clean air\u00a0and\u00a0support for young people<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>were also made at the event.<\/p>\n<p>Burnham said: \u201cIn this time of national social and economic uncertainty, and with politics in Westminster paralysed by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/housing-ceo-brexit\/50462\/\">Brexit<\/a>, Greater Manchester is taking the initiative and setting out an innovative blueprint to give people, communities and businesses hope and confidence for the future.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen we consulted people on the first spatial framework, the public were clear that we hadn\u2019t got the balance right. We listened, reflected, and can now present a radical re-write as promised. It also lays the foundations for radical reform in other policy areas such as housing, the environment and transport.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTogether, we are harnessing the full power of the most advanced devolution deal of any city-region in England for the benefit of our three million residents. And we are putting together the pieces of the jigsaw to reveal the big picture &#8211; a Greater Manchester where prosperity, opportunity, health, hope and happiness are widely and fairly shared across all our people and places.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He added: \u201cAs we outline the city-region\u2019s new plans for homes and jobs, transport infrastructure, clean air and the environment, I want to highlight Greater Manchester\u2019s commitment to putting people at the heart of everything we do.
