{"id":51898,"date":"2019-01-31T15:25:49","date_gmt":"2019-01-31T15:25:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/?p=51898"},"modified":"2019-01-31T15:25:49","modified_gmt":"2019-01-31T15:25:49","slug":"uk-infrastructure-bank","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/uk-infrastructure-bank\/51898\/","title":{"rendered":"UK infrastructure bank needed to replace EIB"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>The EU financial affairs sub-committee has called on the government to establish a UK infrastructure bank, ahead of UK leaving the EU<\/h2>\n<p>Since joining the EU in 1973 the UK&#8217;s infrastructure has been the beneficiary of more than \u20ac118bn (~\u00a3103bn) of lending from the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.eib.org\/en\/index.htm\">European Investment Bank<\/a> (EIB). The UK will lose access to the EIB after Brexit.<\/p>\n<p>The EU financial affairs sub-committee has published its report on Brexit: the European Investment Bank and has stated that the government should consult on establishing a UK infrastructure bank. This should be explored within the government&#8217;s infrastructure finance review and, depending on the outcome of this review, be part of its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/transforming-uk-infrastructure\/48560\/\">National Infrastructure Strategy<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>There has already been a marked decline in funding from the EIB since the referendum and triggering of Article 50.<\/p>\n<p>Commenting on the report,\u00a0Baroness Falkner of Margravine, Chair of the EU Financial Affairs Sub-Committee, said: &#8220;For the last 45 years the UK has relied on the European Investment Bank to invest in all manner of vital <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/major-infrastructure-projects-transparency\/48178\/\">infrastructure projects<\/a> such as Crossrail, London\u2019s \u2018Super Sewer&#8217;, the expansion of Manchester\u2019s tram network and Scotland\u2019s Beatrice offshore wind farm.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The UK\u2019s infrastructure, and the industries that depend on infrastructure spending, will be hurt if the Government does not quickly find a way of plugging the funding gap that will be created if access to the EIB is lost after Brexit.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We&#8217;re calling on the Government to give serious and swift consideration to the creation of a UK infrastructure bank. It also needs to come clean about why it has not claimed any share of the EIB&#8217;s profits, which for the UK could amount to \u20ac7.6bn.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h3>Some of the key findings from the report are:<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Losing access to the EIB could lead to a significant funding gap, especially for large-scale infrastructure projects. The decline in EIB (87%) and EIF (91%) funding since the referendum and the triggering of Article 50 is striking.<\/li>\n<li>With little time left until Brexit, the lack of any meaningful proposals on a future relationship with the EIB or domestic alternatives is disappointing.<\/li>\n<li>The government should give serious consideration to the creation of a UK national infrastructure bank.
