Since the BBC\u2019s Blue Planet II, the UK has woken up to the problem of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/plastics-in-construction\/50024\/\">plastic in the environment<\/a>, with some commentators even suggesting that plastic is a greater threat to the planet than climate change.<\/p>\n<p>Anti-plastic has rapidly become a popular cause-celebre championed by all mainstream media. So, how should the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/energy-news\/cleaner-construction-practices-are-vital-to-tackle-toxic-air\/38364\/\">built environment<\/a> industry respond? Is the problem limited to single-use packaging or are all plastic products a problem to which we must find alternatives?<\/p>\n<p>This topic will be explored at the ASBP\u2019s third Healthy Buildings Conference &amp; Expo, sponsored by Natural Building Technologies, PPM Technology, Wood for Good and The Wood Window Alliance, which takes place on Thursday, 28 February 2019 at London South Bank University.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe construction industry is the second largest user of plastic, with 20% of plastic waste coming from the construction sector,\u201d said Simon Corbey, Associate Director of ASBP.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is estimated we produce globally 300MT of plastic annually, with 50% of this being single use. Piping and conduit are the largest users of polymers in construction and consume 35% of production.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Following the announcement of keynote speakers \u2013\u00a0environmentalist and yachtswoman Emily Penn, a leading advocate for reducing plastic pollution in our oceans; and Professor Sean Smith, Director of Sustainable Construction at Edinburgh Napier University \u2013 a number of exciting conference speakers have also been confirmed, including Professor Anna Stec (UCLan), Martin Gettings (Canary Wharf Group), Dr Stephanie Wright (King\u2019s College London), Kris Karslake (BAM Construct) and Ben Humphries (Architype).<\/p>\n<p>The expo will feature over 20 exhibitors including charities, academic institutions, air testing specialists and leading product manufacturers such as <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thermafleece.com\/\">Thermafleece<\/a>, Steico, Natural Building Technologies and Ecological Building Systems.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is estimated we produce globally 300MT of plastic annually, with 50% of this being single use.
