{"id":52735,"date":"2019-02-18T15:20:53","date_gmt":"2019-02-18T15:20:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/?p=52735"},"modified":"2019-02-18T15:20:53","modified_gmt":"2019-02-18T15:20:53","slug":"plastics-packaging-construction","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/plastics-packaging-construction\/52735\/","title":{"rendered":"Campaign targets plastics and packaging in construction"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ccscheme.org.uk\/\">Considerate Constructors Scheme<\/a> has launched its industry-wide campaign \u2018Spotlight on&#8230;plastics and packaging\u2019 to raise awareness on how the construction industry can reduce, reuse and recycle plastics and packaging<\/h2>\n<p>The launch of the plastics and packaging campaign comes in response to shocking findings from a CCS survey of over 900 people working within the UK and Irish construction industries.<\/p>\n<p>The survey revealed that although over 95% of respondents said the industry needs to be doing something to reduce its consumption of plastics and packaging, over half of respondents (51%) have little understanding of the rules and regulations surrounding plastics and packaging, and only 44% know how to recycle different plastic and packaging materials.<\/p>\n<h3>The survey also revealed that:<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>98% said the over-consumption of plastics and packaging is a global issue.<\/li>\n<li>92% believe plastics and packaging are extremely dangerous to the environment.<\/li>\n<li>81% said the construction industry is not doing enough to reduce its consumption of plastics and packaging.<\/li>\n<li>31% said they frequently use plastics and packaging that cannot be reused or recycled.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>With the construction industry being the second largest <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/plastics-in-construction\/50024\/\">consumer of plastics in the UK<\/a>, it is vital that the construction industry reconsiders the way it consumes and disposes of plastics and packaging to protect the environment and all life.<\/p>\n<p>The CCS is urging all construction sites, companies, suppliers and clients of construction projects to drastically reduce their consumption of plastics and packaging. Not only does this offer significant improvements for the environment and society as a whole, it also makes commercial business sense, with many organisations reporting significant cost savings.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Spotlight on\u2026plastics and packaging\u2019 provides an array of resources to help the industry to address this issue. It includes a range practical case studies and guidance from contractors, clients and service suppliers including: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amawaste.co.uk\/\">AMA Waste Management<\/a>; Aztec; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.balfourbeatty.com\/\">Balfour Beatty<\/a>; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.crossrail.co.uk\/\">Crossrail<\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/organisations\/environment-agency\">Environment Agency<\/a>; Griffiths; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.knightbuild.co.uk\/\">Knight Build<\/a>; Protec; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rightwasterightplace.com\/\">Right Waste Right Place<\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.macegroup.com\/\">Mace<\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.morgansindall.com\/\">Morgan Sindall<\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.multiplex.global\/\">Multiplex<\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skanska.co.uk\/\">Skanska<\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.srm.com\/\">Sir Robert McAlpine<\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wates.co.uk\/\">Wates<\/a> and Ward.<\/p>\n<p>CCS Chief Executive, Edward Hardy said: \u201cAs construction is the second largest consumer of plastic in the UK, our industry has one of the greatest responsibilities to society, and to the environment, to ensure that we are working tirelessly to improve our standards in minimising waste from plastics.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe scheme\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/ccsbestpractice.org.uk\/spotlight-on\/spotlight-on-plastics-and-packaging\/\">\u2018Spotlight on\u2026plastics and packaging\u2019<\/a> campaign provides resources, practical support and guidance helping everyone to take effective measures to tackle this issue.
