{"id":53260,"date":"2019-03-01T10:58:41","date_gmt":"2019-03-01T10:58:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/?p=53260"},"modified":"2019-03-01T10:58:41","modified_gmt":"2019-03-01T10:58:41","slug":"stepnell-major-renovation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/stepnell-major-renovation\/53260\/","title":{"rendered":"Stepnell appointed by RSC for major renovation"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><a href=\"https:\/\/www.stepnell.co.uk\/\">Stepnell<\/a> have begun the major renovation for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rsc.org.uk\/\">Royal Shakespeare Company<\/a> (RSC), contracted to restore its Costume Workshop in Waterside, Stratford-upon-Avon<\/h2>\n<p>Home to the theatre\u2019s award-winning costume-makers since the 1950s, the workshop is in urgent need of repair.<\/p>\n<p>The transformed workshops will feature extended workspace for the costume team; an improved stock room; larger premises for the millinery, jewellery and dyeing and print workshops; new office space; a larger fitting room; a new lift and a new plantroom in the roofspace. The project will also create a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/major-redevelopment-for-york\/52797\/\">versatile new space<\/a> within the workshop area.<\/p>\n<p>The renovation will create 1,644 sq m of modern workshop accommodation, mainly over two storeys, to create enhanced facilities for what is the largest in-house costume-making department of any British theatre with an extensive range of facilities.<\/p>\n<p>Designed by architects practice <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aedas.com\/\">Aedas<\/a>, renovation will also create a new entrance to the RSC offices and Costume Workshop using the 1887 former scene dock doors which were built for the original Shakespeare Memorial Theatre.<\/p>\n<p>Stephen Rebbeck, RSC technical director, commented: \u201cOur costumes are essential for us to create theatre at its best, made in Shakespeare\u2019s hometown of Stratford-upon-Avon and shared around the world \u2013 so we are looking forward to working with Stepnell on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/regeneration-plans-ladywood\/52485\/\">restoration and redevelopment <\/a>of our Costume Workshop.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe project will help us create the best facilities for costume-making fit for the 21st century, as well as offer new training and apprenticeship opportunities and allow visitors to experience our world-class costume workshop for themselves.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Stepnell operations manager, Paul Fish, added: \u201cWe are extremely proud to be working on this landmark project for the RSC, helping create modern facilities for the theatre\u2019s dedicated and highly skilled costume makers.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Funding by the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.artscouncil.org.uk\/\"> National Lottery through Arts Council England<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.heritagefund.org.uk\/\">Heritage Lottery Fund<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/collections\/local-growth-deals\">The Government\u2019s Local Growth Fund<\/a> through the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cwlep.com\/\"> Coventry and Warwickshire Local Enterprise Partnership<\/a>, with additional support from the <a href=\"https:\/\/garfieldweston.org\/\">Garfield Weston Foundation<\/a>\u00a0and other generous supporters.<\/p>\n<div class=\"mk-custom-module-container\">\n<\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Stepnell have begun the major renovation for the Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC), contracted to restore its Costume Workshop in Waterside, Stratford-upon-Avon Home to the theatre\u2019s award-winning costume-makers since the 1950s, the workshop is in urgent need of repair.
