{"id":53317,"date":"2019-03-04T09:50:44","date_gmt":"2019-03-04T09:50:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/?p=53317"},"modified":"2019-03-04T09:50:44","modified_gmt":"2019-03-04T09:50:44","slug":"apprenticeships-positive-construction","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/hr-skills-news\/apprenticeships-positive-construction\/53317\/","title":{"rendered":"Apprenticeships give positive image of construction, says FMB"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>To mark National Apprenticeship Week, research by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fmb.org.uk\/\">Federation of Master Builders<\/a> reveals more parents in the UK want to see their child undertake an apprenticeship than a university degree<\/h2>\n<p>National Apprenticeship Week in England and Wales runs from 4-8 March 2019. The FMB undertook a survey of 2,000 adults and the findings were as follows:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>25% of us would rather our children undertook an apprenticeship;<\/li>\n<li>24% of us would rather our children studied for a university degree; and<\/li>\n<li>50% of us have no preference.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The FMB also asked the same people how they felt about building firms that trained apprentices and found that:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>60% would have a more positive image of a construction firm knowing that it trains apprentices;<\/li>\n<li>41% would be more likely to hire a building firm that trains apprentices as opposed to one that does not.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Commenting on the results, Brian Berry, chief executive of the Federation of Master Builders (FMB), said: \u201cWe\u2019re finally seeing the shift in attitudes with more people understanding the value of undertaking a vocational <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/hr-skills-news\/study-says-career-in-construction-exceeds-many-university-graduate-roles\/39146\/\">apprenticeship rather than a university<\/a> degree.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor too long, apprenticeships were looked down on and seen as the alternative route if children weren\u2019t bright enough to follow the more academic route. With university fees in England going through the roof, and with apprenticeships offering an \u2018earn-while-you-learn route to a meaningful job, it\u2019s no wonder that the penny has finally dropped.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis research signals that the majority of children won\u2019t be suffering undue pressure from their parents or teachers to attend university unless it really is right for them. Not everyone is academic and even for our very brightest students, on-the-job-learning can be an appealing way to prepare for the world of work.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cApprenticeships are a brilliant career path and there are plenty of exciting opportunities in sectors like construction \u2013 we\u2019re crying out for more young people to join our ranks.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Berry added: \u201cNow that we know that the general public is changing its attitude towards apprenticeships, the construction industry must step up and make more apprenticeship places available to young people.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot only will firms be helping train the next generation, apprenticeships are also good for the bottom line.
