{"id":53776,"date":"2019-03-11T11:20:06","date_gmt":"2019-03-11T11:20:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/?p=53776"},"modified":"2019-03-11T11:20:06","modified_gmt":"2019-03-11T11:20:06","slug":"new-report-urges-construction-companies-to-train-employees-in-occupational-health","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/health-safety-news\/new-report-urges-construction-companies-to-train-employees-in-occupational-health\/53776\/","title":{"rendered":"New report urges construction companies to train employees in occupational health"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><a href=\"https:\/\/bandce.co.uk\/\">B&amp;CE<\/a> is urging construction companies of all sizes to provide at least one employee with occupational health (OH) awareness training to ensure compliance with regulation and encourage understanding of occupational health and relevant standards<\/h2>\n<p>The call follows the launch of a new report from Loughborough University <a href=\"https:\/\/bandce.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/Improving-OH-risk-management-in-SMEs-Research-Report.pdf\">Improving occupational health risk management in SMEs:<\/a> the role of major projects which looked into how major projects such as the construction of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thednrc.org.uk\/\">Defence and National Rehabilitation Centre (DNRC)<\/a> can support their supply chain to develop good practices in occupational health.<\/p>\n<p>In light of the report\u2019s findings, B&amp;CE is also calling for improved training materials and increased education regarding OH obligations.<\/p>\n<p>The research, which was carried out in the School of Architecture,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.lboro.ac.uk\/departments\/abce\/\"> Building and Civil Engineering at Loughborough University<\/a>, was made possible after they were named recipients of the B&amp;CE Charitable Trust OH Research Award 2016 worth \u00a325,000.<\/p>\n<p>Margaret Grahamslaw, <a href=\"https:\/\/bandce.co.uk\/bce-welcomes_iso_45001\/\">Head of Occupational Health at B&amp;CE<\/a>, said: \u201cThese recommendations centre around the importance of training in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/guides-reviews\/a-new-era-for-occupational-health-and-safety\/41947\/\">occupational health<\/a> awareness to ultimately improve the wellbeing of workers in the construction industry across the UK.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBy ensuring at least one member of staff in any company, regardless of size, is trained in this area, this can encourage the spread of knowledge in both common OH issues and those that are less well understood.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Lead researcher,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.lboro.ac.uk\/departments\/abce\/staff\/wendy-jones\/\"> Dr Wendy Jones<\/a>, Loughborough University said: \u201cHealth often ends up as the poor relation of safety in construction, and it can be particularly difficult for smaller companies that don&#8217;t always have the right expertise, or who have limited budgets, to get the right arrangements in place.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis research found that some small and micro employers are improving their management of hazards such as dust and musculoskeletal disorders as a result of working on major projects such as the building of the DNRC, which the research was centred on.
