Costain won the grant, with other projects led by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.graffica.co.uk\/\">Graffica<\/a>, PEAN Technologies and Plume Rail.<\/p>\n<p>Costain \u2013 along with partners <a href=\"https:\/\/www.brydenwood.co.uk\/\">Bryden Wood Technology Ltd<\/a> \u2013 will be working alongside the other winners to help Network Rail explore the potential of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/health-safety-news\/smart-technology-safer-construction-sites\/49288\/\">smart technology<\/a> that will change the way they build and maintain Britain\u2019s railway.<\/p>\n<p>Helen Simms, Costain\u2019s consultancy capability director said: \u201cThis is a great opportunity for us to work with Network Rail to demonstrate our forward thinking and practical approach to automated design based on our extensive project delivery experience in working in the rail sector.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am really pleased that the hard work of our team in bidding this work has paid off and that we have secured this amazing opportunity with Network Rail and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/organisations\/innovate-uk\">Innovate UK<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Rail Automated Infrastructure Design technology, which Network Rail aims to implement for the first time in 2020, has the potential to shorten the amount of time it takes to design a route or piece of infrastructure from several months to just several days.<\/p>\n<p>It will automatically design elements of the railway such as track, power supply, signalling systems and bridges, by bringing together various sources of data used by railway design teams to run through all the possible outcomes and find the safest and most efficient design.<\/p>\n<p>Atish Chauhan, a project manager at Network Rail commented: \u201cUsing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/planning-construction-news\/automated-construction\/51936\/\">automated design<\/a> will help Network Rail with producing better designs faster and support our long-term service planning by allowing better assumptions about future infrastructure and associated changes to services.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kelvin Davies, innovation lead for Rail at Innovate UK added: \u201cIt is great to see major industry players such as Costain working alongside SMEs in responding to this Network Rail funding opportunity.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBy bringing together firms large and small, we can maximise the potential for innovation and strengthen the supply chain.
