{"id":56349,"date":"2019-05-01T14:19:23","date_gmt":"2019-05-01T13:19:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/?p=56349"},"modified":"2019-05-01T14:19:23","modified_gmt":"2019-05-01T13:19:23","slug":"acoustic-insulation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/building-control-news\/acoustic-insulation\/56349\/","title":{"rendered":"Acoustic insulation creates quiet space for students near Stansted Airport"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Selectaglaze glazing has helped to create a quiet, conducive space for students at a new college based near Stansted Airport<\/h2>\n<p>Sitting at the end of Stansted Airport runway is a brand-new college which opened its doors for its first intake of students in September 2018.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.stanstedairportcollege.ac.uk\/\">Stansted Airport College<\/a>, part of Harlow College, was a few years in the making. A relationship was developed with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.magairports.com\/\">Manchester Airport Group<\/a> over a period of five years to secure the acre of land and get its buy-in for the proposed college.<\/p>\n<p>Funds were raised via a joint venture to build the college; two separate \u00a33.5m grants from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.southeastlep.com\/\">South East Local Enterprise Partnership<\/a> (SELEP) Local Growth Fund and Essex County Council, as well as a \u00a3300,000 grant from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uttlesford.gov.uk\/\">Uttlesford District Council<\/a> and a \u00a350,000 funding contribution from the Savoy Trust.<\/p>\n<p>Stansted Airport College is the first on-site education facility of its kind at any major UK airport, designed by Pascall+Watson and built by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.willmottdixon.co.uk\/\">Willmott Dixon<\/a>. Courses on offer for students looking for a career in the aviation and related industries include: aviation operations and cabin crew, engineering and aircraft maintenance, hospitality and events management, pre-apprenticeships, apprenticeships and work transition courses. Due to its location, the end goal and dream of all the students attending is just in sight.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.stanstedairport.com\/\">London Stansted Airport<\/a> is the third busiest airport in London, carrying 25m passengers a year to more than 190 destinations in 40 countries around the world. With just one runway serving all take-offs and landings, and the college\u2019s location not far from the end of it, noise was a big concern for those using the facility. Acoustic consultant <a href=\"https:\/\/www.colejarman.com\/\">Cole Jarman Associates<\/a> was employed to make recommendations to create a quiet and comfortable learning environment.<\/p>\n<p>Typically, a Boeing 737 (one nautical mile high) before landing can generate sounds levels in the region of 90-100dB. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/\">WHO (World Health Organisation)<\/a> recommends acceptable classroom noise levels to be 35-40dB, so a significant reduction needed to be made. As it was a new build, high performance primary double glazing was installed, but unfortunately it did not meet the acoustic requirements on its own.<\/p>\n<p>Selectaglaze was approached to help provide a solution with secondary glazing. It is the most effective method of acoustic insulation for windows in extremely noisy areas. Although generally used in listed buildings, they can also provide much-needed additional performance for new builds in areas of high traffic or near major transportation hubs.<\/p>\n<p>Acoustic tests have shown that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/stakeholders\/selectaglaze-secondary-window-systems\/49848\/\">Selectaglaze secondary glazing<\/a> can provide a 45dB reduction if set 200mm from a single glazed primary window with 6mm glass. Based on this, if used in conjunction with high performance primary windows, then the dB rating requirements would be met.<\/p>\n<p>Selectaglaze went on to install 32 units across the site with their Series 10 two- and three-pane horizontal sliders and a Series 41 casement door. All were installed with a cavity of 200mm and tightly sealed.<\/p>\n<p>Karen Spencer, Principal of Stansted Airport College, said: \u201cIt is an amazing place to work, with state-of-the-art facilities for the students. Every\u00a0day they have a clear line of sight to the workplace \u2013 a real incentive for completing their courses and going on to careers at London Stansted Airport.<\/p>\n<p>As for the building, it is hard to believe that we are at the end of the runway as it is so quiet inside the building. Often, the only giveaway that an aircraft is taking off is the amazing panoramic view out of the windows.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Not only have the staff and students already seen the enormous acoustic benefit of the secondary glazing, but they should also gain from thermal insulation it provides and the added security.
