Kier<\/a> has handed over the new Broadmoor Hospital to the West London NHS Trust, after the firm revealed it would take \u00a325m of losses on the redevelopment project<\/h2>\n

Following the Trust\u2019s decision to approve the takeover of the five new hospital buildings, work will now begin on preparations to transfer patients currently being cared for in Britain\u2019s oldest high secure psychiatric hospital to a state of the art of the facility.<\/p>\n

Carolyn Regan, chief executive of West London NHS Trust, said: \u201cThis is a critical step towards the delivery of significant improvements to the way in which we are able to care for patients in Broadmoor Hospital.<\/p>\n

\u201cMany people have worked hard to ensure that we get to this point. I would like to pay particular tribute to the outstanding work of our staff whose compassion and care are all the more remarkable given the restrictions and limitations imposed by the current environment.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis move \u2013 from a hospital which is more than 150 years old to one which has been purpose-built to provide a safe, therapeutic environment for the delivery of care fit for the 21st<\/sup> century \u2013 focuses on hope and recovery and the Trust\u2019s commitment to supporting patients to take a more active role in their care.\u201d<\/p>\n

Kiers\u2019 board had previously reviewed the operational progress<\/a> and cost recovery programme of the Broadmoor Hospital redevelopment project.<\/p>\n

Ben Stevenson, operations director Kier Major Projects, added: \u201cWe’re delighted to hand over the first phase of the Broadmoor Hospital redevelopment programme. This is a crucial step towards providing a modernised and safe environment and we look forward to seeing patients and staff move into the new facilities.”<\/p>\n

Features of the new hospital, located in the current grounds to the west of the existing buildings, include spacious ward areas, maximising the use of natural light, clear lines of sight to ensure staff and patient safety and a layout designed to enable the supervised movement of patients.<\/p>\n
