{"id":56870,"date":"2019-05-13T11:45:07","date_gmt":"2019-05-13T10:45:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/?p=56870"},"modified":"2019-05-13T11:45:07","modified_gmt":"2019-05-13T10:45:07","slug":"prevention-first-mental-health","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/health-safety-news\/prevention-first-mental-health\/56870\/","title":{"rendered":"IOSH urges prevention-first approach\u00a0to mental health"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Four in five British workers won\u2019t discuss mental health problems with their boss because they fear being stigmatised and judged incapable, IOSH urges businesses to develop a prevention-first approach<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.iosh.co.uk\/\">The Institution of Occupational Safety and Health<\/a> (IOSH), says the findings demonstrate that mental health \u201cis still a taboo\u201d in many British workplaces and is urging businesses to develop prevention-first approaches to dealing with it.<\/p>\n<p>The survey, published by IOSH, asked 400 employees from a variety of businesses across Britain to get a clearer picture of what is being done to support workers with mental health problems.<\/p>\n<p>Key findings include: 80% won\u2019t discuss mental health with their line manager; 25% of employees would be more comfortable discussing mental health with a colleague; and 22% of line managers rarely discuss mental health with their direct reports, with a further 11% never doing so.<\/p>\n<p>One employee said: \u201cI have been diagnosed with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/health-safety-news\/campaign-mental-health-construction\/54666\/\">anxiety and depression<\/a> but never admitted to it at work for fear of being stigmatised.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The results also reveal that 62% of line managers don\u2019t get enough help from their organisation to support the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/health-safety-news\/construction-staffs-mental-health\/55499\/\">mental wellbeing of their staff<\/a>, with only 31% of respondents saying they have been sufficiently trained to recognise the signs of poor mental health.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ioshmagazine.com\/biography\/duncan-spencer\">Duncan Spencer<\/a>, head of advice and practice at IOSH, said: \u201cThese survey results are deeply worrying. They demonstrate that while much work has been done to remove the stigma of mental health, is still a taboo in many workplaces.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBusinesses need to work hard to break down these taboos, by creating more open lines of communication. Line managers are vital in creating workplaces that are positive for people\u2019s mental health and wellbeing, but they need to be equipped with the right skills and knowledge to do this.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We encourage businesses to create a prevention-first approach to managing mental health and wellbeing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In conjunction with Management Today, IOSH produced a white paper informed by the survey findings, to provide guidance on the role of line managers in promoting positive mental health.<\/p>\n<p>It argues it is vital line managers understand how to manage fluctuations in workers\u2019 mental health, what the causes of ill-health can be, how to recognise when employees may be unwell, and how to advise on where to access further support if they are to be effective in promoting positive mental health in the workplace.<\/p>\n<p>Employers are already required by law to provide training on physical health and safety, and IOSH believes it is time the same requirements applied to mental health.<\/p>\n<div class=\"mk-custom-module-container\">\n<\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Four in five British workers won\u2019t discuss mental health problems with their boss because they fear being stigmatised and judged incapable, IOSH urges business to develop a &#8220;prevention-first&#8221;
