A striking\u00a0\u2018W\u2019\u00a0shaped building nestled in ancient woodland, the University of Kent\u2019s\u00a0Sibson building\u00a0was\u00a0designed to encourage collaboration and communication, bringing\u00a0together Kent Business School<\/a> and the School of Mathematics, Statistics\u00a0and Actuarial Science\u00a0<\/a><\/h2>\n

At the heart of the\u00a0\u00a326m\u00a0facility\u00a0is a dramatic central concourse filled with natural light.\u00a0Reception areas,\u00a0social spaces and teaching facilities\u00a0are easily accessed from here, with spaces\u00a0including large and small seminar rooms, three new lecture theatres with collaborative seating,\u00a0MBA and IT suites, open plan postgraduate research spaces\u00a0and a dedicated financial trading room.<\/p>\n

The Kent Business School and the School of Mathematics, Statistics\u00a0and Actuarial Science had outgrown their existing accommodation.\u00a0As the fastest growing department within the university, the business school was desperate for more space.<\/p>\n

The university had ear-marked the Sibson site to become an attractive\u00a0destination within the campus. Beyond the Sibson building lies student accommodation,\u00a0but there was no direct route\u00a0between the two areas. So as part of the scheme, the university\u00a0also\u00a0extended the landscaping to create a direct route from Sibson to the accommodation and the sports centre, thereby\u00a0improving\u00a0flow around\u00a0the campus.<\/p>\n

Creating social learning spaces<\/h3>\n

The University of Kent worked with architect\u00a0Penoyre\u00a0& Prasad<\/a>\u00a0to bring the two departments into one building. Initially, the university had planned to create three linked but separate buildings:\u00a0one for each school, and a combined teaching building.<\/p>\n

However,\u00a0Penoyre\u00a0& Prasad\u00a0suggested combining\u00a0the three entities into a single building, with a shared teaching\u00a0and learning\u00a0space in the middle.\u00a0The idea of merging two schools was unusual, but the university wanted to encourage collaboration<\/a> and in particular, enable staff and students to work together more closely.<\/p>\n

Michael\u00a0Fostiropoulos, project architect said:\u00a0\u201cPart of the\u00a0brief was to provide\u00a0attractive\u00a0social learning spaces\u00a0to encourage staff and students to interact.\u00a0We\u00a0specified heterogeneous furniture that can be used in different ways and offers a choice of how to study.<\/p>\n

\u201cA caf\u00e9 on the ground floor encourages the two schools to collaborate\u00a0and it\u00a0has become a popular social learning space.\u00a0In fact, the food is so good that\u00a0students\u00a0and staff\u00a0come from all over the campus to eat there, further\u00a0positioning\u00a0the Sibson building as a destination within the university campus.\u201d<\/p>\n

\"SibsonShowcasing\u00a0and preserving\u00a0a beautiful landscape<\/h3>\n

To lighten the impact of the building on the woodland,\u00a0Penoyre\u00a0& Prasad\u00a0designed\u00a0a zigzag form, with its shape winding between the trees. In this way the scale of the building isn\u2019t evident from any location on the site as it is never seen as a single mass. In addition, the building offers beautiful views above and below the forest canopy and the use of reflective glass\u00a0and anodised aluminium curtain walling\u00a0mirrors the trees.<\/p>\n

Fostiropoulos added: \u201cThis was one of the first projects\u00a0for which we used ARCHICAD extensively;\u00a0it was fully embedded in the project from start to finish. Following a detailed 3D\u00a0survey of the site and woodland, we had a topographical model produced. All the trees in the model were sized correctly and we made adjustments to the building to snake in between the trees, to minimise the impact on the landscape.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe building lies\u00a0on a substantial\u00a0slope.\u00a0So\u00a0you enter on one level,\u00a0but at the\u00a0opposite end of the\u00a0building, you\u2019re on a different floor. With the help of ARCHICAD,\u00a0we were able to\u00a0get the right levels for the floors. We\u00a0used the BIM model<\/a> to calculate the best balance between cut and fill requirements, working with available budget while still maintaining two main level entrances.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Sibson building was designed to achieve\u00a0the\u00a0BREEAM\u00a0Excellent\u00a0rating,\u00a0with\u00a0new cycle and pedestrian pathways\u00a0integrating\u00a0it\u00a0into the campus and green roofs helping to\u00a0increase biodiversity.\u00a0Passive measures of natural ventilation\u00a0were prioritised\u00a0over active measures, while\u00a0extensive roof-mounted photovoltaic panels provide\u00a0more than\u00a010% renewable energy.<\/p>\n

Stakeholder consultation\u00a0and communication<\/h3>\n

The project posed a number of challenges, both in terms of bringing two distinct departments together and also protecting the existing woodland.<\/p>\n

To help overcome these,\u00a0Penoyre\u00a0& Prasad\u00a0engaged with end-users throughout\u00a0the project by running\u00a0regular\u00a0workshops for staff and students.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u00a0used\u00a0BIMx\u00a0to\u00a0show\u00a0staff and students the ARCHICAD model in its different phases,\u00a0says Fostiropoulos,\u00a0\u201cso that the preferred solutions\u00a0could be agreed and\u00a0to\u00a0bring\u00a0stakeholders\u00a0along in the story.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe used the same\u00a0ARCHICAD view\u00a0and kept updating it to show how the designs evolved and how detail was added.\u00a0BIMx\u00a0is so valuable for engagement;\u00a0it\u2019s great to be able to show end-users the build-up of detail\u00a0throughout the design phases.\u201d<\/p>\n

Late in the design stages, the university wanted to make a marketing video for its website.\u00a0Penoyre\u00a0& Prasad\u00a0exported screenshots directly\u00a0from ARCHICAD,\u00a0which were used\u00a0by a specialist CGI firm\u00a0to create a detailed fly-through of the building.<\/p>\n

BIM collaboration\u00a0and coordination<\/h3>\n

Penoyre\u00a0& Prasad\u00a0worked with main contractor Willmott Dixon<\/a>, structural\u00a0engineer\u00a0Price & Myers, and\u00a0M&E engineer\u00a0Max Fordham on the Sibson Building. The team worked closely together throughout, sharing information\u00a0using\u00a0IFC,\u00a0with\u00a0Penoyre\u00a0& Prasad\u00a0holding the federated model in ARCHICAD.<\/p>\n

Fostiropoulos commented: \u201cWe carried out the clash detection between models ourselves.\u00a0Price\u00a0&\u00a0Myers use Revit, so they converted their files to IFC and we then used ARCHICAD for the clash detection. Initially, we were a little apprehensive, but once you get the hang of importing the structural model into ARCHICAD, it works well.\u201d<\/p>\n

The lecture theatre roof is made from structural steel supporting large glulam timber beams.\u00a0Penoyre\u00a0& Prasad\u00a0used ARCHICAD to federate all IFC information from\u00a0the\u00a0subcontractors\u00a0to coordinate\u00a0the complex structure.\u00a0Extensive coordination was required to support the production of the frame and later to coordinate delivery and\u00a0construction\u00a0on site, working among\u00a0and protecting\u00a0the\u00a0existing trees.<\/p>\n

Another technically challenging aspect of the design\u00a0was\u00a0the large and very complex rooflights that span the double-height central atrium.\u00a0Initially the team followed an iterative\u00a0process,\u00a0with structural engineers testing spans and loadings, M&E engineers looking at ventilation and thermal modelling, and architects exploring form, daylighting and aesthetics. From this,\u00a0Penoyre\u00a0& Prasad\u00a0created a federated model\u00a0that was shared with the specialist subcontractor. The BIM workflow enabled this final fabrication information to be brought back into\u00a0the ARCHICAD model where interfaces\u00a0such as\u00a0roofing and cladding were detailed.<\/p>\n

As\u00a0main contractor\u00a0on the project, Willmott Dixon\u00a0used ARCHICAD and\u00a0BIMx\u00a0throughout the construction phase.<\/p>\n

Fostiropoulos said:\u00a0\u201cWe used the 3D model to help\u00a0explain our ideas,\u00a0which was very useful.\u00a0We\u00a0also used the\u00a0CGI fly-throughs and images as communication tools;\u00a0for\u00a0example\u00a0to show the carpenters on site how we envisaged the end result.\u201d<\/p>\n

An award-winning design<\/h3>\n

The\u00a0building opened in early 2017 and has since won a RIBA National Award\u00a0and three RIBA regional awards:\u00a0the\u00a0RIBA South East Award,\u00a0the\u00a0RIBA South East Building of the Year and\u00a0the\u00a0RIBA\u00a0South East Project Architect Award for senior architect Michael\u00a0Fostiropoulos.<\/p>\n
