Outdoor workers have been ignored for too long as our pollution crisis deepens.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The campaign \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/www.britsafe.org\/awards-and-events\/events\/past-events\/2019\/time-to-breathe-campaign\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Time to Breathe<\/a>\u2019 is providing\u00a0encouraging visuals for employers and outdoor workers to take action on reducing air pollution. The visuals can be found <a href=\"https:\/\/www.britsafe.org\/campaigns-policy\/time-to-breathe-air-pollution-campaign\/downloads\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The White Paper states: \u201cAmbient air pollution, defined as \u2018potentially harmful pollutants emitted by industries, households, cars and trucks\u2019 is rapidly becoming recognised as a global public health issue. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The World Health Organisation<\/a> estimates that 4.2 million premature deaths worldwide can be attributed to ambient <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/health-safety-news\/hidden-air-pollution-in-the-workplace-impacting-workers-health-and-wellbeing\/51091\/\">air pollution<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>Global ambient air pollution accounts for:<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>29% of all deaths and disease from lung cancer.<\/li>\n<li>17% of all deaths and disease from acute lower respiratory infection.<\/li>\n<li>24% of all deaths from stroke.<\/li>\n<li>25% of all deaths and disease from ischaemic heart disease.<\/li>\n<li>43% of all deaths and disease from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>In the report the British Safety Council is calling for:<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>The UK to adopt the World Health Organisation\u2019s exposure limits for the main pollutants.<\/li>\n<li>Government action to ensure ambient air pollution is treated as an occupational health issue and adopt a Workplace Exposure Limit for Diesel Engine Exhaust Emissions (DEEE).<\/li>\n<li>Improvements to pollution monitoring across the UK, so that all regions can have the same accuracy in emissions data as London.<\/li>\n<li>Recognition that protection from the dangers of air pollution should be enshrined in law as a human right.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>British Safety Council have launched Canairy\u00a0\u2013 an app that helps employers and outdoor workers minimise the risks of polluted air. The app can be found <a href=\"https:\/\/www.britsafe.org\/campaigns-policy\/time-to-breathe-air-pollution-campaign\/canairy-the-mobile-app-for-outdoor-workers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Lawrence Waterman, chairman of the British Safety Council, said:\u00a0<strong>\u201c<\/strong>The impact of air pollution on people working in large cities is starting to be recognised as a major public health risk. However, we are yet to see any true commitment to addressing this issue by the government and the regulators.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201c<\/strong>The Time to Breathe campaign, together with our recent report, is a call to action for policymakers, regulators and industry leaders. The social and economic implications of ambient air pollution are clear.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It must be recognised as an occupational health hazard, much like some <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/health-safety-news\/tackling-exposure-asbestos\/56570\/\">toxic substances such as asbestos<\/a>.
