St Albans Football and Athletic Club has been fined \u00a31,000 after a volunteer fell through a fragile roof and died as a result of his injuries<\/h2>\n

Luton Magistrates\u2019 Court heard how, on 18 July 2017, the 71-year-old St Albans City Football and Athletic Club Limited volunteer suffered fatal injuries after he fell through fragile roof sheeting onto terrace steps below.<\/p>\n

An investigation by the Health and Safety Executive<\/a> (HSE) found that the football club had failed to ensure a suitable system was in place to authorise certain work.<\/p>\n

It was also discovered that inadequate supervision, together with volunteers being provided with keys to gain uncontrolled entry to the football ground, resulted in access to the roof to carry out repairs in an unsafe manner.<\/p>\n

St Albans City Football and Athletic Club Ltd pleaded guilty to breaching Section 3 of the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 and has been fined \u00a31000 and ordered to pay costs of \u00a31000.<\/p>\n

After the hearing HSE<\/a> inspector Sandra Dias said: \u201cThis was a tragic and wholly avoidable fatality caused by the failure of the club in its duty of care towards volunteers.<\/p>\n

\u201cEmployers who use volunteers have to ensure their safety, the same as if they were a paid employee.\u201d<\/p>\n

Section 3 of the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974<\/em> places general duties on employers and the self-employed to conduct their undertakings in such a way as to ensure, so far as is reasonably practicable, that persons other than themselves or their employees are not exposed to risks to their\u00a0health\u00a0or\u00a0safety.<\/em><\/p>\n
