{"id":58535,"date":"2019-06-14T07:56:49","date_gmt":"2019-06-14T06:56:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/?p=58535"},"modified":"2019-06-14T07:56:49","modified_gmt":"2019-06-14T06:56:49","slug":"fpa-grenfell-tragedy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/building-control-news\/fpa-grenfell-tragedy\/58535\/","title":{"rendered":"FPA urges further reforms 2 years after Grenfell tragedy"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thefpa.co.uk\/\">Fire Protection Association<\/a> has renewed its call that the government\u2019s changes to building regulations and the ban on combustible cladding do not go far enough to protect buildings<\/h2>\n<p>The Fire Protection Association has stated that if we want to prevent another Grenfell Tower tragedy, then it\u2019s time for immediate change.<\/p>\n<p>The organisation remains firm in its message that two years after Grenfell, the government\u2019s changes to building regulations and the so <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbctoday.co.uk\/news\/building-control-news\/cladding-ban-fire-chiefs-call-for-more\/49720\/\">ban on combustible cladding<\/a> do not go far enough in protecting buildings and the people who live in them, from fire.<\/p>\n<h3>The Fire Protection Association urges Government to consider the following solutions:<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Third-party certification<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 FPA welcomes the acknowledgement of the value of independently verified products, but believe this assurance should be mandated and extend to the installers of products and the risk assessors<\/li>\n<li><strong>Extending the ban on combustibles to all high-risk buildings regardless of height<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 not just buildings over 18 metres<\/li>\n<li><strong>Ban single staircases in building in excess of 18m<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 to offer both an entrance and exit staircase<\/li>\n<li><strong>Mandatory installation of multi-sensor detection for all high-risk occupancies<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 a fire detector that monitors a number of potential dangers, including smoke, heat, carbon-monoxide.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Jonathan O\u2019Neill, OBE, managing director, Fire Protection Association, commented: \u201cThe Fire Protection Association supports a total ban on combustible building materials, to all high-risk buildings, such as schools, hospitals, nursing homes, blocks of flats \u2013 not just those buildings over 18 metres.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe also want a ban on single staircases in all tall buildings, because in the event of a fire you need at least one staircase for people to be able to evacuate the building, and a second staircase for the fire and rescue services for entry.
